Dear Friend,
It is exactly 7 days before Christmas. I started my day off by going to the mall with Normani to find a Christmas present for Lauren. To say it was stressful is an understatement. Normani noted that Lauren will probably like whatever it is that I give her, but I didn't just want to buy an item that I pulled out of a hat.
"Come on Mila. We have been searching for three hours! Just go buy her a shirt or something." Normani suggested.
"No Mani! I have to get her something special, something she will actually like.' I declared as we made our way inside a jewelry store.
"What about this?" Normani asked, pointing at a rhinestone bracelet which seemed to sparkle the whole room.
"Mani, we're not shopping for you. We're shopping for Lauren. I don't think-" I reiterated, pausing before making my way to the necklaces as a piece of jewelry caught my eye, "Mani, look at this."
"Hello. That's actually one of our newer pieces. It's a double sided personalized necklace. If you'd like, we could actually have it fully engraved by today," the woman in a black suit pointed out.
"Oh my gosh Mila! That's beautiful. It's Lauren's style too! You definitely need to get it." Normani declared.
With little persuasion needed from the two girls, I bought the necklace. The necklace was in silver with a small heart pendant. I had asked the lady to engrave Lauren on the front of the necklace. The back was engraved with the words, To the girl my heart belongs to -C. I hope Lauren likes my present for her. This was the least I could give her considering all the other things she's already done for me. She deserves the world in my opinion.
"Hey I'm gonna use the restroom before we go. Do you need to go?" Normani asked as I told her no. She instructed how I can wait for her outside since she won't take long. I pulled out my phone, waiting for Normani when suddenly, a boy came bumping onto me which caused me to drop the present I had gotten for Lauren.
"Hey, I'm so sorry! I didn't see you there. Are you alright?" the boy apologized, picking up the bag I had dropped.
"It's fine, I'm okay." I said, taking the bag from him, "thanks."
"Wait, you're Camila, right?" he asked.
"Yeah, I am," I answered as I took a good look at him before realizing that I knew who he was. "Austin, right?"
"Yeah! Are you here shopping by yourself?"
"No, I'm actually waiting for my friend. She had to use the bathroom before we left."
"Oh okay. Well, it was nice seeing you," he responded with a smile on his face before Normani appeared, coming out of the automatic doors.
"Hey Austin!" Normani said excitedly before pulling him into a greeting hug. "What are you doing here?"
"Hi Mani! I'm just doing some last-minute shopping," he continued, "Hey, you're coming to my New Year's party, right?"
"Are you kidding? It's practically tradition!"
"Camila, you should come too if you're not doing anything," Austin asked invitingly. "A lot of people are coming so it should be fun." I lied and told him that I couldn't because I had planned on spending New Years with my family. The truth is, I didn't have any major plans for New Years. I usually spent that night with Ally and Dinah.
During the car ride home, Normani proceeded to ask me if I were lying about having plans with my family.
"No, I didn't exactly lie. I'm probably going to spend New Years with Dinah and Ally, and they're basically family so, yeah," I interjected.
"Well then Dinah and Ally can come to Austin's party. It's like the biggest party to kick off the new year! Everyone goes, even kids from other schools go."
"I don't know. I don't really like parties anymore." The party I had gone to ever since my parents passed away was the last one I ever went to. I guess the incident left me traumatized. It's not that I'm scared to go to one, I just don't think I would enjoy parties again as I once used to.
"Well, I bet Lauren would want you to go. Me and her have always gone ever since freshman year."
"Okay fine. I guess I'll think about it if it's something that Lauren wants to do. Anyways, thanks for helping me find her present and thanks for the ride as well."
I always try my best to do what Lauren wants or likes. If she wanted me to go to this party with her then I would. Heck, if she wanted me to jump in front of a moving train, I probably would too. I guess love does that to you; it makes you do things you didn't think you would ever do.
I was missing Lauren so I decided to call her on the phone. I had asked her about the party and if she actually wanted to go. Lauren confirmed that she and Normani have gone every year since they were a freshman but she also affirmed that she didn't have to go this year. She continued to say that if I wanted her to just come over that it would be okay with her.
"No Lauren. I want to go to the party. I want to go with you." I guess I was half lying because I really would have rather spend New Years with Lauren at mine or her house instead of going to a party.
"Camila, are you sure? Austin's parties are usually really loud and rowdy. It might not really be your scene, babe."
"Well, hot yoga wasn't really my scene either, but I went to that with you last week," I told her.
"Okay fine, we can go if that's what you really want." Lauren asserted. We proceeded to talk about our plans for Christmas. Lauren and I mutually decided to spend Christmas Eve with our families. But on Christmas day, we had planned for me to finally formally meet Lauren's parents. It's strange because even my grandmother and Sofi has met her parents, but it was accidental. Two weeks ago, my grandma and Sofi were at the grocery store as Lauren and her parents were also at that day. So, the only one left to meet them is me. I had been to Lauren's house plenty of times, but it always happened to be when her mom and dad were at work or had other plans. My grandma praised that they were very nice people and I truly believe that. I mean, just look at how Lauren turned out. Something tells me that they at least got that part right. I'm still nervous though because what if they don't like me? Or I say something wrong? Lauren also informed me that out of the few girlfriends she's had, I'm the first one to be meeting her parents. I guess that's a good thing because their expectations aren't high. I just hope they'll like me.
Yours Truly,
Camila
