Dear Friend,
Dinah and I volunteered to donate canned goods at an elementary school today. The school is doing some sort of food drive which goes towards students whose families are struggling. Normally, Ally would be here as the three of us do this every year, but Ally is currently on a flight to Texas to meet up with her uncle. She mentioned something about job opportunities after graduating.
We arrived at the school, carrying bags of canned food. A lady greeted us at the door who seemed to be very nice as she even helped us carry our bags to the cafeteria. She instructed that we just needed to deposit the cans in the box and the rest would be taken care of. The students have already been let out of school so the hallways were pretty much a ghost town. My phone was occasionally buzzing throughout the whole car ride and up to now.
My Princess [4:32 pm]: You should come over, softball practice got canceled.
Ever since Lauren and I's cabin getaway, we can't seem to be away from each other for long periods of time. Though when we have to be, we are constantly either texting each other or talking on the phone.
"Are you just gonna be on your phone all day?" Dinah asked as she placed the cans in the food drive box.
"Sorry, Lauren keeps texting me," I apologized, my eyes still fixed on my phone. "She said hi by the way."
"Do you guys ever get sick of each other? I mean, you practically live in each other's pockets," Dinah joked, but at the same time, the statement having some truth to it.
"Nope, how could I ever get sick of Lauren?" I asked, finally helping her deposit the cans in the box. "She's all that I could ever want in a girlfriend."
"You're annoyingly cute," Dinah responded. "I wish I had my own person I could text all day."
"I text you every day Dinah," I told her.
"Yeah, but that's because you're my friend, Mila."
I know Dinah always talks about wanting to be in a relationship. I mean she jokes around about the topic almost every day, but I think there's always some truthfulness in her jokes.
"What about Jarryd?" I asked her, recalling how she'd had the biggest crush on him ever since middle school.
"Yeah he's a cool guy, but I don't know," Dinah said unsurely. "He's not really my type anymore."
"So what's your type now?"
"Hmmm," Dinah replied, looking up at the ceiling, trying to find her answer. "Someone who can dress nice, with nice hair, and can make me laugh-,"
"So, Normani?" I interrupted playfully, wanting to know how Dinah will respond.
"What?" she answered, a surprising and blank look on her face.
"I said, what about Normani?"
"What about Normani?"
"She can dress nice, has nice hair, and can make you laugh," I replied, reiterating the traits Dinah had listed.
"Okay Mila, what are you talking about?" Dinah questioned seriously as she sat on the chair.
"You know what I'm talking about," I told her. "You two have been acting different ever since my birthday, even Ally too which leads me to believe that you're covering something up. And I know this conversation is long overdue, but I just haven't had time to say something to you about it."
"Mila, I don't know what you're saying," Dinah denied. "Mani and I are friends. Just friends."
"Yeah like how Lauren and I are just friends?" I asked her, pretending to be annoyed. "I know you're not entitled to tell me anything but I just thought you would considering I would tell you if you asked me."
This is a method I like to call Make Dinah-Jane Feel Guilty. A method that consists of giving her the silent treatment along with making her feel a hint of guilt. Trust me, it works every time.
"Okay fine, something did happen while you and Lauren were gone that day," Dinah admitted. I smirked mischievously in response. "I hate it when you do this, Mila," she added in annoyance.
"So, spill the beans," I demanded, sitting close to the other girl.
"Okay so after Lauren took you out on your birthday, me, Ally, and Normani, went back to your living room and watched a movie," she began. "Then we somehow got into playing truth or dare and my dare was to kiss the person on my left. Well, Mani was on my left."
"So, you kissed her?" I asked, wanting more details.
"No, she kissed me."
"What? But it was you said it was your dare."
"It was. I told them I wasn't gonna do it," Dinah explained. "Then Mani was calling me a wuss and next thing you know, she kissed me. It all happened so fast, but we didn't think anything of it then."
"Did you kiss her back?" I asked.
"No, I didn't kiss her back when we were playing the game. But I did kiss her again when I thought that we were the only ones awake," she replied, feeling embarrassed.
"What?!" I exclaimed in astonishment.
"I kissed her again. Partly because I wanted to prove that I wasn't a wuss and also because I wanted to. But Ally kind of walked in on us and we told her to promise not to tell anyone. And it's not that I didn't want you to know, we just wanted to keep it between the three of us."
I understood what Dinah meant by wanting to keep it a secret. I mean, it's not every day that you kiss one of your best friends on the lips twice in one day. She further went on to explain how even though Normani and her have been hanging out a lot, they actually have never brought up the topic ever since.
I think Dinah is afraid of rejection. Even though it is imminent that Normani feels the same way about her, Dinah does not believe that. She believes that Normani probably thinks nothing of the kiss and that it was a mistake. Dinah's state of mind reminded me of how I'd felt when Lauren first kissed me.
Nonetheless, I advised Dinah that she should talk to Normani about it. Though it is probably easier said than done, I told her that life is too short and what if the world ended tomorrow? Then would she have regretted not talking to Normani about the feelings she had for her? I think sometimes we get caught up in the little things that we forget that there is no guarantee for tomorrow. I know I get in that mindset sometimes and it's inevitable. The only thing we can really do is to live in the moment and surround ourselves with the people whom we love.
