Dan has been living under a dark light. There's no escape for him until he meets his neighbour. Normally, buttering up to your neighbour is the case and then you don't tend to talk to them besides the occasional 'hello, how are you?' right?
It seemed Daniel had began developing feelings for his said neighbour who's also been living under a dark light too. Some people may admire darkness but not until they feel and see the true experience of being left in the dark they definitely won't.
