Phil is a hidden Earthbender and counts on the Fire nation not to find out his little secret. Phil had a secret hatred towards the fire nation for everything they'd caused to destroy Phil. When Phil spots Dan coming towards him he believes that he was there to take him away after he finds out about Phil's secret which leads Phil to kidnap Dan and run away keeping him captive.
