A/N: I tried to put as much of my personal experience into this chapter as I could so most of this chapter actually did happened in my life. Of course, there may be a TEENSY-WEENSY difference ;) heh heh guess you'll just have to read...
Y/n's POV
Today's the day. The day that's conflicted me with so many emotions that my head has begun to drown in them. Not a single thought stays in my head for more than a few seconds before being interrupted by the next. At this point I've tried to tune them out and not think of anything at all but to my dismay I was now thinking about not thinking about surgery. Is that even possible?
Apparently, it is.
This morning has been fuzzy. I can't remember what I have and haven't done and I feel as though time is both standing still and rapidly approaching. I don't want to move but at the same time I want to do everything before I have to head into the hospital.
I finished packing a small suitcase that contained some of my belongings for my stay in the hospital and walked out of my room lugging it down the stairs. When I reached the second to last step I heard the phone ring which was soon followed by my mothers chatter with whoever was on the other side.
"Mmhm we can certainly come early. Uh huh, yes I understand we'll be there close to 11."
I glanced at my mom wondering where we had to go only 2 hours before I had to be at the hospital for check-in. My question was soon answered but not in the way I had expected.
"Y/n are you all ready to go to the hospital? They called and said they were running ahead of schedule and wanted us to come earlier."
I stood frozen at the base of the stairs and slowly crumpled to the floor. I wrapped my arms around my knees and rocked back and forth. I was supposed to have 2 more hours to gather my thoughts and calm my nerves but now I only have 20 minutes.
So, I did what I hadn't done in a long time.
I sobbed and didn't hold back any of the pain or worry I was feeling. My vision became blurred as tears soaked my eyes and face and I heard wailing noises that I never would have known I could make.
I'm downright terrified and this time I can't run away from it.
I almost didn't even notice my mom as she put a warm blanket around me and just held my sobbing, limp body. I felt as though my emotions were now clouding around my figure. Clear for everyone to see. Impossible for anyone to break through.
-time skip to the car ride-
I look out the window of our car, my eyes still damp. I had finally collected myself enough to walk to the car and I told myself that I could cry later. Right now, I should stay strong for my family since the 4 hours I had to be in surgery we're going to be absolutely nerve-wracking for them.
As I watched trees flicker in and out of my sight while the sun danced between them, I thought of a book I had once read. It said the trees ahead of us when in a car may look different from farther away, the future, then when they are next to us, the present. However, they are actually best seen from behind us because even though they passed by us too fast it entails that we saw them up close at a point in our lives.
I guess right now I'm scared of surgery because I know it's there but I don't know everything that will come with it. I will only know that once it's behind me.
"We're here."
-time skip to pre-op-
I shifted to find a more comfortable position in the hospital transport bed they reserved for me. The hospital gown I was wearing made me feel vulnerable, as if it were a label defining that I was damaged or broken. The hair net I was wearing made me feel even less human and the tight compression socks barely warmed my literal and figuratively cold feet.
By this point, I'm worn down from crying and I bet that I'll feel this 'heavy' sensation until I no longer have to wait.
Before operation, each doctor that would be in my operating room came and introduced themselves and explained what they would be monitoring during my surgery. I thought it was pretty cool that they took time to actually let me know what would be going on in there. It was about 12:30 by this point and the final doctor entered my curtained off room to introduce himself as well as give me the anesthesia and wheel me into the operating room.
My family squeezed my hand one final time before I would see them 4 long hours later. We said our love yous and goodbyes. I could see the ceiling above me pass by as each tile moved to the top of my vision before disappearing. I heard doors being pushed open and I could see the walls of the room were a blue color. I saw unfamiliar machines surrounding me and I heard an even more unfamiliar voice. I'm not sure if it was the voice itself or the chill of the room that made me shiver.
"You're going to black out any minute from the anesthesia. Don't be alarmed we will take good care of you."
I began to fade away but not before I heard someone say, "Dr. Brenner, vitals are stable..."
Darkness surrounded me.
A/N: Oooo betcha didn't see that coming...
