Chapter 22: Sheriff's Car

Happy Easter to everyone that celebrates! I'm actually pumped for this week since my birthday is in a few days WHooO

Y/n's POV

"What did you just say, kid?"

My eyes looked away from the cabin and landed in trance on the face of a man. He had slight bags under his eyes and his beard looked as if it was a bit unkempt. In all honesty, he looks worn down from stress and lack of sleep. His posture was stiff but I could sense almost a trace of, worry? lurking in his eyes.

I continued to stutter over my words as El's warning replayed in my head.

'Too dangerous'

Could I trust this man?

"I- I-"

"Kid, spit it out already. Whatever it is, you either tell me what I think I just heard or I take you in. Simple as that."

"I- I said El."

I looked at the man who was now looking at me with wide eyes. He scanned my face to see if I was telling the truth and his face finally showed that he realized what just happened. He put a hand on my shoulder, looked around surveying his surroundings, and began to walk away from the cabin pulling me with him.

"Alright kid, I'm not taking you in but it's not safe to talk here. Got it?"

"I guess?"

He led me to a sheriff's car and opened the door for me to get in the passenger seat. He walked around the front of the car and got in as well. I was about to ask what was going on but stopped to watch him. He unplugged the built in communication radio and started searching the car. Oooo maybe this is like a spy movie where they search for bugs. Wait, but that means trouble. Nevermind, I'm good. He finished his inspection as he pulled down the visor and saw nothing there.

"Looking for bugs?"

"Yeah, how'd you know?"

"Well, I'm not completely oblivious..."

"Alright, well. Start talking. What do you know and who are you? I haven't seen you around here."

"My name's y/n y/l/n. My family just moved here, but I know all about the- wait. How do I know I can trust you?"

"Well kid, for one thing I am the sheriff. The name's Hopper. But secondly, I just want to know what you know. I'm assuming you know about the events of last year based on 'El' but I just need confirmation. You'll just have to risk it."

I stared at him. He's right, there no way for sure I know I can trust him but he sounds like he's got answers at least? And why would he be outside of the cabin El is probably in? For all I know he could be the kid's father.

"Alright, here goes nothing..." I sat there and summarized everything I knew from Will's disappearance, to the Demogorgon, to El and I ended with explaining my visions.

"I reached her by accident in my vision. It was almost as if something wanted me to find her and learn about what happened. But in all honesty, I don't know how I got here. All I know is that I had a vision during the night and I talked to her briefly."

"Did she tell you anything?"

"Not really. She was more concerned with telling me to imagine something I wanted to see. Weird, right? I wanted to see where she was to find her in person and next thing I know, I see the cabin. Maybe I sleepwalked here? I dunno. Then she was saying something about sensing that I have powers-"

"You've got to be shittting me..." Hopper replied as he rested his forehead on the steering wheel.

"What?"

"Well, kid- El has these 'so called powers' too. Different kind than you but nonetheless freaky weird. She grew up as a lab experiment." He paused and looked at me, "Please tell me you weren't one of those kids too."

"Ah no. From what I can remember I've always lived with my mom, dad and sister. The only time I even stepped foot in a lab was for back surgery about a week ago."

He turned to me with a serious expression. "Who did the surgery for you?"

"Dr. Brenner, I believe. Why?"

"Shit."

I looked at him and saw a mix of disgust and anger in his expression. What's going on that I don't know about? Why does my stomach feel like it's in knots?

"Dr. Brenner was the asshole that tortured El to use her powers for research."

Well shit.

I actually really enjoyed writing this one with Hopper, I feel like these two could be a power duo...
