Dustin's POV

I woke up to the smell of eggs and bacon wafting into my room from the kitchen. Well, that and my mom yelling "DUSTY WAKE UP!" loud enough I'm sure the neighbors next door could probably hear.

I trudged into the kitchen yawning and tried to brush a curl out of my face before it would get into my eyesight. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes only to focus on my mom looking at me with a small smile and slightly raised eyebrows.

I shot back a confused look at her and she simply said, "I hope you change before we go over to meet the new neighbors."

I glanced down noticing my red plaid pajama pants and my white t-shirt that had a brown stain on it. I was too tired to clean it off from when I spilt my chocolate pudding on it last night before bed.

"Mom-" I groaned. "Of course I was gonna change, I just didn't think we'd have to greet them at the crack of dawn." I announced dramatically.

"Dusty, it's 9:00! The suns been up for hours and if you weren't so busy staying up past your bedtime I'm sure you could actually see the sunrise. Now get ready or I'm leaving without you, and a little bird told me there is a sweet young girl your age right across that street to meet."

My mom said the last part in a sing-songy voice as if to peak my attention but I was already running to my room to change. Only one thing my mom had said caught my attention.

She was my age.

Belle's POV

I was unpacking the last box of my clothes into my brand spankin new closet- did I mention it was a walk-in closet?!- when I heard the doorbell ring. I'm gonna bet it's the first neighbor to give us their 'welcome to the neighborhood spiel'.

I listened as my mom opened the door and greeted the strangers in a cheery voice. She ushered them in and I knew what to expect next so I began my journey out of my room and down the stairs before my mom could even sweetly yell for me to introduce myself to the neighbors.

By the time my mom turned to yell my name, I walked up with a smile.

"Oh there she is! I didn't even have time to call for you!" my mom joked with the lady and her son as they politely laughed and smiled. You know, the laugh you hear adults use when they talk and rattle off some cliché line and the other one slightly snicker because they want to give the impression that they were intently listening even though the joke isn't funny? Yeah, it was that one.

"Hi, I'm Belle!" I introduced myself with a polite grin.

"Why hello dear! I'm Mrs. Henderson and this here is my Dustin!" I shook hands with the nice lady as well as the tan, curly haired boy. He looked to be about y/n's age and I already knew I was gonna be seeing a lot more of this kid around with y/n.

"Here mom, I'm gonna take Dustin upstairs so he can meet y/n."

"That's so sweet of you, thank you Belle."

I waved goodbye to Mrs. Henderson, motioned for the boy to follow me and lead him up the stairs. I heard my mom begin to brag about us being such responsible kids or something and rolled my eyes. Honestly, I offered to take him upstairs so I wouldn't have to stand at the door listening to boring chatter for hours with a fake smile plastered on my face. I'm just glad it worked and it didn't come off as rude.

"Y/n's room is the one with the door open, I'm sure she's drawing or doing something boring like that. See ya around kid."

"Thanks Belle, I'll see ya around." Dustin replied.

At least he seems to be well mannered I thought as I continued to organize my room.

Y/n's POV

I was already living my dream, sitting in my window seat sketching the street below. The only thing off was that I had to sit there in my back brace which made the experience a little less comfortable and dreamy. It was the only thing keeping me from escaping all of reality.

(This is like what my brace was like, ugh it was so uncomfortable to sit in)

I was startled out of my thoughts by a knock on my bedroom door. I turned my head to see a boy about my age with curly hair and cute dimples staring back at me and peering around my room.

"Mind if I come in?" he asked politely.

"Uh sure, if you want to"

He made his way across the room to where I was sitting and sat on the opposite side of the window from me. I saw his gaze shifting down to my torso to look at my brace before quickly glancing back to my face as if he was trying not to be rude and stare, but I could tell he was curious.

It was then that I realized I was still in my pajamas so my brace was on top of my shirt. Normally during the day I wear my brace under my shirt and over a tank top. Well, there goes my idea of keeping this all a secret, I sighed.

"Oh, uh I guess I should introduce myself, I'm y/n."

"That's a rad name, I'm Dustin. I live across the street."

I smiled at him glad to know at least one person my age in this town. Maybe it won't be so bad here after all...and maybe he'll be ok with me being different...

A/N: Hi, I hope you guys are ok with me really drawing out this story... I always enjoyed the longer books on here so I wanted to try that with this one. Next chapter should be out by late tonight or possibly tomorrow.

Thanks loves.
