The man who walked in the classroom door I assumed was Professor Lonsdale. He had flat, yet curly dark brown hair, the same color as his eyes. His skin was like mocha, and he seemed to be around his mid 20s. He seemed too young to even be a teacher. He was around 6 feet. I will admit, he looked good.
But, his good looks and the smile on his face didn't reach me. The darkness in his eyes did. They were supposed to be frightening, but I wasn't frightened by him. All of the girls in the class either were frightened by those eyes or those good looks, though.
He clasped his hands together loudly, as if he had to get the attention that was already on him. "Okay class," He said in a cold voice. "I'm Professor Keiynan Lonsdale." His deep voice boomed through the class, an Australian accent being shown. "I am a former actor, and currently run my own acting business called Lonsdale Acts Inc. I graduated at the age most of you are now. I was quite gifted, and have a degree in acting and business. Now, just because I'm basically forced to, when I saw your name, stand up and say something about you."
All the kids groan. We assumed we'd have to do it all day, and the first one was always miserable.
As attendance goes on, it gets to Andi soon. "Andilyn Albertson?" Mr. Lonsdale calls out in his now thicker Australian accent.
Andi stand up next to me, a pep in her step. "Well, my name's Andi, and a fun fact about me is I've been acting in plays and commercials since I was 5!" She was cheerful in this answer. The only one, as we'd soon learn.
"Ash Miller?" The professor says after a few more depressed names and introductions.
I sigh slightly as I stand up. "Well, my name is Elizabeth," I start, using a valley girl accent.
He looks at me, angry. "Miller, please take this seriously." He sternly says.
I groan, ignoring both the snickers from my answer, and from Mr. Lonsdale's reply. I needed to be funny in order to get enough popularity. I enjoyed being popular, even though I had a solid group of friends. "I'm Ash, and two fun facts about me are that I'm dating Andi, and I think this exercise is pretty fuckin' stupid!" I say sarcastically as I slump back into my chair.
The kids were snickering as approval. The professor, however, was not.
Mr. Lonsdale goes on with the rest of the class. It was mostly him talking about himself and what we'll be doing this semester. He was very strict, and tried to be intimidating, but I was not intimidated.
As we exited the class, Mr. Lonsdale held out his arm, trapping me inside. He leaned his face close to my ear. So close that I could feel his warm breath. "Don't you ever-," He starts, aggression building up in his voice, "- ever disrespect me again." He says, menacingly. "Do you hear me?"
At this point, the last of the people were clearing out of the class. Andi had given me a concerned look before she left, but I dismissed it. I put my mouth up to his face, close to his ear, even though there was nobody listening. "I'm not afraid of you." I truthfully say.
I push past his arm on my chest, and walk into the bustling halls. I run into Nathan - or, more he runs into me. Literally. His arm wraps around my neck, and he messes up my hair. "Dude!" I complain, putting my hair back into its normal state.
He laughs, patting the bag on my back. "How was acting with Andi?" He asks.
I shrug. "Well, Professor Keiynan Lonsdale," I say, mocking his voice, "is a total dick."
"That sucks, man," he sighs, throwing his arm back around my neck.
I shrug. "It's cool. How was your first period? Math, right?" I question.
He nods his head in conformation. "It was good." He answers, his head still moving. "There is this one girl though, and, mh mh mh, I'd like a taste of that ass!" He says, slapping mine.
I chuckle. "You are so cliche," I remind him. He was a football player, a total chick magnet, and he loved girls for their body more than anything else.
He shrugs. "So what?" He jokingly says.
I chuckle, shoving my hands in my pockets. "I gue-," I was cut off by a loud and annoying static.
The static softens, and a loud voice comes over the speaker. "Ash Miller, please come to the main office. I repeat, Ash Miller, please come to the main office. Thank you." It cuts off, and I groan.
We only had a few more minutes until second period, so I knew I'd be late. The main office was at the other side of campus compared to biology, my next period. "You good?" Nathan ask.
I shrug. "I guess." I tell him. "You just get to class. I'll see you back in the dorm?" I ask, walking backwards so I could still see him.
He nods his head, and waves me good bye. I turn back around, and take my time walking to the main office.
When I get there, I tentatively knock on the door before opening it. "Mr. Bower?" I ask. Mr. Bower was our principle, and I was directed to his office.
"Ah!" He says, throwing his hands up. "Ash Miller, I presume? Take a seat, take a seat." He was an enthusiastic man, and talked more with his hands than his words.
Upon opening the door wider, I see Colton nervously fidgeting with his hands in another seat, beside the one Mr. Bower motioned me to. I was confused and quite concerned, but sat down next to Colton anyway.
Mr. Bower weaved his fingers together, resting his chin on them. "So, Ash, turns out your money situation is... tighter than expected." He starts. I look at Colton, who kept his head on the ground. "So, if you want to stay at this school..."
I sigh. "I need a scholarship of some kind?" I finish for him.
He nods his head, and Colton turns to me, finally. "I'm sorry, Ash!" He quickly says. "I didn't realize... I just..." He sighs. "The truth is, I kinda got fired." He explains, looking away again. "I'm trying to find a job right now, but... well, I didn't get fired, but they started to catch on to the... well, some news got out that could have ended my career. I'm sorry." He says.
I wrap my arms around Colton. I don't know if he was more like a father or a brother to me. Maybe both. "It's okay, Cole. It's okay. I get it. You did what you had to do."
I had completely forgotten about the principle observing this whole scene, and was focused solely on making sure Colton was okay.
But, Mr. Bower's coughing brought my attention back to him. "So," He starts again, "we sadly don't have any more academic scholarships or sports scholarships left... but we do have one as an assistant." He explains.
"Anything," I say without hesitation, hands gripping the arms of my chair.
"Well, you major in acting, right?" I nod my head. "It's for an assistant at an acting class company. Would you like that?" He asks.
I nod my head. "Anything," I repeat.
I loved it here at DU. I was with all of my friends, and had everything I could ever dream of. I was a big skier, and a basketball fan, two things that Denver had. I couldn't lose this opportunity.
He gets out some paperwork, and I instantly recognize the company. Lonsdale Acts Inc. Fuck.
This was going to be a long year.
