A/N: I like this name better. Do you?
"I'm Bill." The carer said from the front seat. "Sorry I haven't introduced myself yet. It's been quite a rush tonight, we had to find you a spare bed in the House really quickly."
I ignored him, furious with the world.
"I get that you don't want to talk." He said, still focusing on driving. "Just know that it'll be alright. I know it seems like it won't, but it will. You'll be alright. That goes for you too, Robert."
Robert had been so silent that I could have forgotten he was there, had it not been for my nose that still hurt. His eyes were sad and he was staring out of the window into the darkness. If I was stuck in a residential facility with weirdos like him I'd be so annoyed. One minute he was punching me in the face and the next he was acting depressed and vulnerable. Did I seem so outwardly wrong too?
"It's late, isn't it?" Bill said, breaking the silence. "If I worked any other job I would not be up at four AM driving around. Ah, well. We're nearly there."
Neither Robert or I said a word.
Bill was clearly used to one-sided conversations, and looked at me through the mirror. "Alice works here, you know."
"What?" My heart leapt. "Is she there now?"
"She'll be there tomorrow morning. I've been texting her. She's worried about you." He told me.
I scoffed. "No one's worried except Alice. Everyone else just wants to send me away... I hate my family."
"Hey, now, that's not true. We can talk about this more tomorrow." He pulled the car into a dark gravel car park and sighed. "I'm going to have to sort a couple of things out before we get in, so can I trust you two in the car for a minute? Of course, I'll have to lock you in. Policy."
I looked at Robert and then back at Bill. Raising my eyebrows, I wasn't sure about being locked in a car with a maniac. Before I could say anything, though, the door was slammed and I heard the lock click. It was awkwardly silent.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
I tapped my finger against the car door, just in case any of the demons from the hallway at home had followed us.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Making me flinch, Robert started smacking his elbow against the window. His face looked determined as he smashed and smashed against the glass. Just as I was about to ask what he was doing, the glass shattered and he was climbing out of the car window, the sharp glass ripping his t shirt as he slipped through.
"What are you...?" I hissed.
"Come on." He outstretched his hand. "Quickly."
"What?" I couldn't wrap my head around what he was doing.
"Come on... I'm getting us out of here." Robert whispered. Taking a deep breath, I took his hand and felt his cold skin against the palm of my hand. He nodded and I wrapped my fingers around his hand tightly, letting him pull me up and out of the car into the freezing night. After a moment, I let go of his hand and he started sprinting towards the main road. He turned and looked at me. "What are you waiting for, Bean?"
"Bean?" I frowned at him.
"I don't know your name... I give everyone nicknames." He started walking towards me. "Hurry up!"
"My name is Bella!" I got irritated with him. "Bella! Or Belle!"
"Close enough. Come on!" He took me by the arm and dragged me with him.
As we ran I shook him off and coughed angrily. We sprinted and sprinted until we got into a small forested area. I started panting and spluttering, my tiny limbs not able to take the exertion. Robert noticed and turned round. "Do you want to take a break?"
I shook my head. He was right, we needed to get away from that place. They were going to try and break me. I wasn't going to let that happen. We kept running, but I fell behind him slightly. I hadn't noticed how weak my body had been recently, I had just sort of stopped exercising. Now I could really tell that something was up with my body. Was it today's blood loss, stress or my lack of eating? All three? I was a mess.
My head started to feel slightly faint, and the world became almost pixelated. Breath didn't seem to be reaching my lungs and I stumbled, tripping over my own feet and falling onto the ground. I winced as my body hit the icy ground, but I was okay.
"Shit!" Footsteps sounded towards me and as I sat up I saw Robert looking down at me. "I'm sorry! Are you alright?"
"Yeah." I was embarrassed. "I just feel kind of faint..."
"Let's sit down for a minute." He said, sitting cross-legged in front of me. "We're far away enough. They won't be able to find us."
I nodded, still panting.
"Sorry for pushing you too far." He looked guilty.
"No, no. It's fine, Robbie. Don't worry about it." I tried to get a hold of myself.
"Robbie?" He looked annoyed at me all of a sudden.
"What?" I frowned.
"My name is Robert..." He looked down and twiddled his thumbs.
"I thought you liked nicknames." I was interested in how quickly his mood could change. I wonder what all of that was about? Also, what was he in the facility for? Should I ask? Is it rude?
"I only like nicknames on other people. Not me." He said quietly, suddenly looking sad.
"Why?" There must be some kind of story behind that. I liked stories.
He didn't say anything, instead taking off his gloves and handing them to me. Robbie seemed to be the sort of person you didn't say no to, so I put the gloves on and we sat there in the cold.
