Ashley coughed and came to sit on the end of the bed. She stared at the floor, tucking her bright red hair behind her ear. Her face was dotted with little gold piercings and her eyes were shimmery and beautiful. Kai had done well with her.
Had.
"Bella." She turned to me. "What has Kai told you?"
"He said you two broke up." I said awkwardly.
"And what else?" She asked.
"I guess that... He was talking to another girl. And that it was more of a break... Than a breakup. Maybe." I didn't want to tell her what he exactly said in case it was wrong and she got angry.
She took a deep breath and held it for a minute. "I think he's only told you half the truth... So you don't get let down, I guess."
"What happened?" I said desperately, trying to sound calm and collected.
"Your brother cheated on me. We were living together at the time, and he would leave every night for two weeks to go to the bar, but I knew that wasn't where he was going. One night he got back with hickeys, and I sat him down and made him tell me everything." She paused. "I'm not going to give you all the details, because... You know... That's your brother."
I thought about it for a second. "Ew."
She smirked before continuing. "Well, of course, I left. I went to stay with my cousin Juliette and her boyfriend Tyler. I was kind of couch surfing for a while, but now I've got a tiny apartment I'm staying in for a while. You'd hate that apartment."
"Why?" I asked.
"It's number 66." She said quietly.
I tapped everything around me four times, as fast as I could. My heart almost burst out of my chest. "Get off my bed!" I ordered.
She stood up, shocked. "I'm sorry!"
"If you've been somewhere of that number I can't have you sit on my bed... I'll die in my sleep. Are you crazy?" I tried to calm myself down.
Maybe I was the crazy one.
"I'm sorry." She said again. "We used to be able to joke about stuff like that."
"It got worse." I frowned.
Ashley looked around at the mental facility room we were in. "Perhaps I should have guessed that."
"Sorry." My cheeks flushed. "It's embarrassing."
"It's not embarrassing." She shrugged. "At least, it shouldn't be."
"What's going to happen with you and Kai?" I changed the subject.
"I don't know. He's not himself... I don't get it. Something's really bothering him." She pulled her sweater over her chin and stood there looking like she really needed a hug. "I love him."
I tried to forget her apartment number and stood up, giving her a tight hug. She smelt like perfume and had a slight linger of cigarette smoke. Her body felt thin and fragile, which was unusual for her. She wasn't herself without him.
"I think it's my fault." I said into her shoulder.
She sniffed, and I realised she was crying.
"I think it's my fault because I'm his sister and I'm unhappy. I think he thinks it's his fault because I grew up with him struggling. That's silly, though, if anyone it's our parents fault for having bad genes. He doesn't see that, though. He thinks it's him." I told her, still in the hug.
"Why did he cheat on me, Bella?" Her voice shook.
"I think he's just confused." My heart swelled with pride as I thought about my brother. "He's been weird with me, too. But I know he'll get over it. He always does. He's the best most greatest human in all the world. He's my big brother and I will never ever give up on him. And I know you won't, either."
"Never ever." She pulled away from the hug and wiped her eyes. "I'm sorry... I shouldn't be dragging you into all of this."
"I think I'm the only one that can help, so really I should be in the middle of everything." I meant what I said. "Now I know your side of the story I can talk to him."
"What are you going to say?" She asked.
"I don't know yet. But I will sort everything out. You two will be back together in no time." I promised.
"But, Bella... I'm not sure I want to date him again. I just want him to be okay." She avoided my eye contact.
"But you love him." I protested.
"Sometimes that isn't enough." She shrugged.
Maybe now was a good time to tell her. "I've got a boyfriend." I blurted.
She almost choked on the air she was breathing. "What?"
"I've got a boyfriend. He's called Robbie." I shrugged.
"Oh, Robbie! The kid that Felix had to get from the parking lot?" Ashley smiled. "I've heard about him."
"Yeah." I nodded. "He's a bit weird sometimes."
"That's so cute. Come and point him out to me." She gestured to the door and I hopped up, opening it slowly. I caught sight of him at the far end of the corridor.
He was talking to Devin and Meredith, laughing and joking. My heart warmed slightly. Robbie never used to talk to strangers.
"That's him, isn't it?" Ash caught the way I was looking at him.
I nodded.
Robbie caught sight of us and waved, his face lighting up. "There they are!"
Devin and Meredith turned round, smiling. "How'd your chat go?" Devin asked.
Ash and I looked at each other for a moment. "Yeah, okay." Ashley called to them. "Alright, I think."
"Yeah," I confirmed. "It was okay. How was your guys' chat?"
Devin chuckled and looked at Robbie. "We're finding out all of your secrets!"
"Robbie!" I groaned.
