I opened the door apprehensively, listening to the nearing footsteps. I thought I was going to be angry at them. I thought I would hate them.
I didn't.
As soon as I saw Kai I ran at him, throwing myself into his arms. He hugged me as tightly as he could. My legs dangled in the air as my arms wrapped strongly around him. I cried into his shoulder. How could I ever hate my big brother?
He sniffed softly into my skinny shoulder and pulled back, setting me back down onto the floor. "What's wrong?" I fretted.
Kai chuckled and shook his head. "I told myself I wasn't going to cry."
Our parents stood behind us, both looking quite sad themselves. I walked up to them and gave them each a quick hug. My eyes scanned the hallway. "Where's Ashley?"
Kai went red and slightly quiet. "She's visiting Adrianna and Felix."
I grinned at the mention of Kai's best friends. They had known me forever and always been so sweet, so I was excited at the chance to see them once in a while.
"They've got news." Dad said, making me turn to look at him.
"What?" I wracked my brains to try and guess what it was. Were they coming down to see me in the hospital? Kai smiled at our parents and my eyes darted back and forth between them all. "What is it? What's the news?" I demanded.
"I can't wait for her reaction." My mum laughed.
"What is it?" I groaned.
Kai decided to put me out of my misery. "Adrianna is pregnant. They're having a baby." He grinned. My mouth dropped open and my family laughed kindly.
My face started beaming. "When?"
"When what?" Kai smirked.
"When is she having the baby?" I asked desperately.
Kai frowned for a moment and looked at our mum. She smiled and nodded, her dark brown hair bouncing slightly. "Five months."
I gasped and clasped my hands together, starstruck."Wow..."
My brother took my hand in his and walked through my bedroom door. "Show us around, Sis. Have you unpacked yet?"
"I can't wait to see their baby!" I ignored Kai for a moment, imagining the adorable bundle that I would soon get to meet. "I wonder if it'll be a boy or a girl?"
Dad rolled his eyes jokingly. "I said that once you told her she'd never shut up about it. I did warn you."
Kai pulled me in for a hug. "I just had to see some excitement in her eyes for once. I thought it'd give her some drive to get better so that she could come out of here by the time Ria has her baby."
"What?" I pulled away. "What do you mean? The baby is five months away."
He looked slightly taken aback. "Well... You've got to stay here until you get better."
Butterflies wriggled in my stomach. "You said you were only keeping me here for a couple of days."
Mum and Dad stood there and stared blankly at Kai for a second. He shifted. "I never said that."
"You did!" I insisted.
"No I didn't." He replied, touching my shoulder. "It's good here. It's good for you."
"You don't know what's good for me!" I pushed him away.
"Don't push your brother!" Mum scolded. "It's not his fault."
Kai looked at her and shook his head. "No, mum, it's fine."
"You don't know what it's like!" I interrupted him as he was about to speak. "You're just sending me away! All of you!"
My brother sighed. "You really think I don't know what it's like? Do you even remember when I was your age? Do you remember the shit I went through? Do you remember the bullying I put up with? I wish, I fucking wish, that someone sent me somewhere to get help. Don't take this for granted. Use this opportunity. Get better."
I sat on my bed and wiped my eyes. "I just want to go home."
"I'm going for a drink of water." Kai mumbled as he walked out of my room, his footsteps disappearing briskly down the hallway.
Mum and Dad closed the door behind them and sat next to me on the bed. Dad put his arm around me and pulled me in for a hug. I quickly tapped my shoulder against him four times, but he didn't notice.
"He's just angry." Mum promised. "He blames himself."
"Why?" I frowned. "If anything it's your guys' fault."
Dad laughed. "Thanks, Kid."
"I meant genetics." I said quickly. "Sorry..."
It's alright. You're probably right." He shook his head and grinned. "Ignore your brother's annoyance. He can be a dickhead when he's going through a hard time. Everyone can. You having problems has really hit him hard, especially after everything with Ashley."
"What happened with Ashley?" I asked.
"He didn't tell you?" Dad looked at Mum.
"We'll let him tell you." Mum gulped. "Some other time."
Deciding not to start this battle, I tapped my feet together four times to stop anything bad happening to us and sighed. "I feel bad."
"Why?" Dad asked.
"Kai... I upset him." I turned round to look out of the window behind me. I could see him having a cigarette by the family car.
"I'll go get him." Dad stood up and gave us a smile before disappearing in the same direction that Kai had gone.
Mum took my hand as we waited, her soft skin pricking with nervousness. The clock in the hallway ticked and tocked as we waited. Everything felt slightly distant.
