Chapter 2

I awoke bright and early. The sun was shining in my eyes. My tail was throbbing with pain. I sat up. I was on a flat rock, that was covered in moss and leaves. I looked down at my non existing tail. It was just a little stub of a tail. It was wrapped up in leaves and vines, which were soaked in blood. I let out a small whine. I saw someone at the entrance of the cave that I just realized I was in. It was StripeTail. I was so glad to see he was okay.

The blood on his face had dried up, making his fur stick to his face. And his light coloured fur was stained red, but I couldn't see the cuts through his long grey and white fur. His ear wasn't bleeding anymore but it was still drooped. He walked up to me. His face was blank. He looked kind of angry. "What were you thinking!?" StripeTail yelled. The sudden yell made me jump. "Did you want to get yourself killed or something?!" StripeTail continued. I thought he'd be proud of me. "Why didn't you listen to your orders?; I told you to stay there!" He said then sighed.
"I was worried... And now look at you!" He pointed with his head to my stub tail. "Your not going to fit in with anyone with that "
"But...it's just a tail" I was too curious to stay silent until the end of his talk.
StripeTail sighed. "Sadly...you with understand one day"
I cocked my head. "Cats out there in the world, aren't as they are in the stories" StripeTail looked out the cave over the water, then turned to me.

"But in our family, we care about each other, no matter what we look like" StripeTail smiled and gave me a cat hug "Me and Mom are very proud of you" he said. I smiled and hugged him back. It was hard to get StripeTail to be proud of you. I remember when I was two months old, Mother caught a rabbit when I was asleep, and put it in front of me. When I woke up, she told me I caught it. "You caught a rabbit! Me and your brother are very proud of you" she said. "I'm not proud of her" StripeTail had said. Mother gave him a look "I can't lie, I'm not a liar" he shrugged. "He's proud of you" mother winked. "Nope!" StripeTail had yelled from his den.

"Let's go tell Mom your awake" StripeTail now said.

"Mama, I'm awake!" I ran to the exit of the cave, but fell before I got there. StripeTail caught me before I landed.
"I feel so...unbalanced" I complained. I walked to Mom. I was leaning a little on StripeTail.

Mother was In her den. Her den looked just like everyone else's. It was a whole in the ground. Like a rabbit burrow, but bigger. Mother and father dug all of them themselves.

"Your up!" Mother stood up slowly, not putting too much pressure on her back left leg, which seemed to have a slice in it. I walked over to mom slowly, leaning back a little to keep my balance. I rubbed myself on mother, and she rubbed back. "I'm glad your okay" mother smiled. "You were very brave. But please, never do that again, okay?" Mother asked me, still smiling. "Okay" I nodded, smiling back. Mother looked at StripeTail. "Now are you proud of her?" Mother said. StripeTail huffed and rolled his eyes, looking away. "No" he mumbled. I giggled a little. He was embarrassed. I decided it was a funny thing to see. So I said "He already said he was." mother giggled. I looked up at StripeTail. He was pretending he couldn't hear. He was looking up at the sky.

I giggled, then straightened my face and sat beside mom. "Mother?" I said, and mother looked at me. "Why did the dogs come over the water" I was being bothered by the thought for awhile now.
Mother lost her smile, and StripeTail looked down. "Your too young to-" mother started, but I cut her off "Am I always going to be too young?" I asked, not unkindly. "Uh...it's..a....uh.." mother stammered. "It's a battle.. to take our land.." mother said, trying not to meet my eyes. "How long has this been going on?" I said unhappily, but not rudely. "I'm sorry. It's been happening since before StripeTail was born." She said. "1 year?!" I gasped. "More...it has been like that since before me and your father were mates" she said and I was actually convinced my mouth dropped to the floor. 'That was like, 3 years ago!' I thought. Mother sighed. "It all started as me and your father, we had lived here our whole lives. Our clan wanted to leave because humans were getting close" she said, still not meeting my green, confused eyes. "When they left me and your father stayed behind. We wanted to stay in our home forever. And we weren't afraid of humans." I listened closely to every detail of the story.
