We continued walking. The smell was becoming unbearable. We all coughed and complained. It was now sunrise, and time to sleep. But nobody wanted to sleep. We couldn't with all this smell anyways. We just wanted to get out of here, and get it over with. We wanted to get to The Peace Clan, and finally have a home. A bed. A den. A leader. A clan. To finally not feel like a stray, group of cats. We wanted to be apart of a clan once more.
"How long until we get to The Peace Clan?" Backstab asked, in a complaining voice. "I'm not sure...it's taking longer than I thought..." Ra said, his eyes full of thought.
"Great..." I sighed in a sarcastic voice.
"Maybe...five days?" Ra said in an unsure tone. "What!?" Everyone exclaimed. "You said that days ago!" Blackhawk growled. "I would have been there five days ago, if it wasn't for how slow you were walking" Ra said. Blackhawk growled.
"Me? Slow?!" Blackhawk barked.
"Yes. I would have been running, with You'se I have to walk" Ra said.
"Oh yeah? Why is that? You think we can't keep up?!" Blackhawk barked.
"You want to run?" Ra asked, a grin spreading across his face.
"Yes, I do!" Blackhawk growled.
"Well, there's no turning back" Ra warned. "I won't need to turn back!" Blackhawk snarled. "Okay, to please your Highness" Ra rolled his eyes.
Ra began to run full speed.
Blackhawk ran after him.
"Great... Let's go!" Better said, running too. We all ran after Ra and Blackhawk. It was more fun than just boring old walking! We should have done that earlier!
....Or so I thought....~~~~~
I huffed and puffed, and my tongue was hanging from my mouth.
"Can't...we just...rest?!" I called after Ra. Ra was sitting in a tree.
"The dog did say no turning back" Ra said. "But...it's sunrise... Soon!" I yelled. "Ssh! When it's sunrise, we can rest.. If you can survive that long" Ra said, and jumped down the tree.
I moaned and dropped onto the floor.
"It wouldn't be a good idea to sit here alone, while Ra and Blackhawk go on ahead." Gentle said to me. I looked up at her and sighed.
"I know..." I hesitated, before I got up, and me and Gentle joined with the other exhausted kittens. My legs were burning like fire. My paw pads felt the size of a watermelon. Not that I had ever seen a watermelon. But they were probably the size of a teenage cat or something. That's how I imagined them anyways.
My mouth was so dry it felt like sandpaper. I felt like puking all over the place. I was so thirsty and hungry.
"I'm starving! I'm gonna die!" Better whisper yelled. "Ssh!" Ra hissed.
"I was whispering!" Better growled.
"Don't speak at all!" Ra growled back.
Better groaned. "Why did we have to get stuck with this guy?" Better asked me. "Your still speaking!" Ra growled.
"But I'm so qui-" Better began.
"Ssh!"
Better growled, then sighed."Um...R?" Backstab called in a shaky voice. We all followed his voice.
Backstab was visibly shaking in his pelt. "What did you find?" Ra asked, running over to Backstab.
"B-b-b-b-bones..." Backstab's voice was shaking horribly.
Poor Backstab...Me and Better walked over to Backstab, and Blackhawk, Flower, Gentle, and Snicker followed close behind.
I looked over to see two cat skeletons latched onto each other. They looked like they had been fighting, pinning each other to the floor, and all out of the sudden...died. There bones looked fresh...but how? There was no blood, fur or meat anywhere. So how did they die? It was as if they just, died on the spot...they didn't look like they had killed each other.Backstab shakily walked towards us, and sat down. Ra studied the skeletons.
"What do you think happened?" Gentle asked nervously.
"That doesn't matter... What matters is that we keep going to The Peace Clan, and don't turn back" Ra said.
I exchanged a glance with Better.
Then I looked at Backstab who was still shaking. It wasn't that scary?
He seemed to be a brave, strong and wise cat, why did this bother him so much? Curiosity began to flood my mind. I shook my head."Let's go" Ra began to fast walk, and we all followed after him.
Backstab was at the back.
I decided to ease my curiosity after a few minutes of fast walking.
I slowed down until Backstab caught up to me. "Hey Backstab?" I said.
He was still shaking, he was in deep thought. "Backstab?" I asked again.
He was still shaking horribly.
He just stared at the floor with wide eyes. He concentrated on nothing in particular, which is why I guessed he was in deep thought.
He almost looked like Flower, completely out of this world.
"Backstab?" I repeated. He shook his head shakily. "Backstab?!"Backstab shook his head and finally looked at me. "The bones obviously aren't that scary. What are you really afraid of?" I asked.
"When I saw the bones, that was scary enough, but I was smelling around for any clues of what happened. You know curiosity? Always gets to everyone. Especially kittens." Backstab started. I nodded.
"I smelt the bones, and guess what scent was on them...I haven't seen many bones to know the smell of them, but I know now..." Backstab said. "What was it?" I asked, my heart burning in curiosity. "It smelt like the air" Backstab said. "The air?" I asked.
"Take a deep breath, and smell the air" Backstab said. I took a deep breath, but quickly coughed from the horrible smell that had been bothering us for days.
"Exactly" Backstab said.
"You mean they smelt like this horrible smell that's been in the air?" I asked. "Yes. But not as strong and unbearable. Just tickling my scenes" Backstab said. "So your saying that smell is the smell of bones?" I asked.
"I think its the smell of death. But for two cats to have such a light smell, how many cats could have died to have a smell that strong, that we could smell from miles away?" Backstab said.
I thought about that. How many cats could have possibly died to cause a smell spreading across the land. Days away we smelt it. And I'd say we're still days behind...
A shiver ran down my spine.
"Maybe that's why Ra didn't want to tell us what the smell was" I said.
"Who's Ra?" Backstab cocked his head to the side. "Ra? Did I say Ra? I said R, how could you get mixed up. Maybe your just tired" I quickly said.
Backstab shrugged. "Okay."We continued walking... And walking... And walking... And walking.
Until finally... It was sunrise. Finally time to rest. I dropped to the floor in exhaustion. "There are no trees to shelter ourselves" Ra said.
There were a couple of random trees. Maybe five, thin, baby trees, as far as the eye could see. "Let's just sit under one of the baby ones for some shade" Snicker suggested. We all walked to a thin, normal sized tree. Not too big, not too small, but very thin, and not much leaves. Everyone curled up next to the tree. Flower seemed to be on edge. She was cowering behind Blackhawk since the smell appeared. She must know what it is. How? I don't know... Maybe it has to do with those two skeletons she kept visiting.
She obviously knows what dead cats smell like...Blackhawk sat down, and grabbed me by the scruff, and dropped me in front of him. "You know I got legs?" I said in a jokey tone. "You also got a scruff" he said, curling up.
Flower ran to his side and curled up behind him, as if he was her mother, that she knew would protect her.
"Why is this girl following me? Do I look like her mama?!" Blackhawk whisper yelled. "She probably sees you as the strongest and best at protecting her, because of your size. Plus, you do seem to enjoy having kittens around." I chuckled.
Blackhawk rolled his eyes, then closed them, and drifted asleep.
I looked over at the other kittens that were curled up together, then at Ra, who sat, looking into the distance... As usual. I closed my eyes, and waited for sleep to do its job. But he seemed to be slacking off, because I waited for about half an hour, and the heat of the sun was still keeping me awake. I missed sleeping at night.I opened an eye, to see Ra still looking into the distance. I stood up and stretched. I took a deep breath, before I quickly ran up the tree that partly sheltered us from the sun. I stayed close to the tree, and kept my claws out, making sure to lean some extra weight on my hind legs. I finally got to a comfortable spot. It only took up to two minutes. I curled up, and was soon joined by Ra. Trees were my place to sleep. The floor, I got hot, and felt too close to everything, like something could get me any moment. While up here, I felt free, and alone. Like the only ones that sat in this tree, or in my heart, were the only ones who existed.
