"Mama! Mama! look what I got! look what I got!" I repeated, excited that I had finally caught us some food.
I'm five months old. Now when I remember what they had said when I was a newborn, it was kinda embarrassing."Very clever dear! Now eat it all up " mother said. I was going to share it, but when mother said that, I didn't hesitate. I stuffed the whole cockroach in my mouth, its legs were sticking out from all sides. I finally shoved the bug down my throat.
"Where's StripeTail, Ma?" I whined.
"Go look around. But don't go past the water, we don't know what's out there" she reminded me, as she looked into the distance. "Okay!" I said and ran away, looking for my brother. He had just turned one year and five months old today. Mother said it was nothing special. She said I can't celebrate birthdays every month, but if I wanted every year. I looked at her weird. Who said anything about celeb-whatever-ing on a birthday? I want to see how big he is now. Mother replied by rolling her eyes, which made me want to see StripeTail even more. He is always rolling his eyes, which I think is rather funny."StripeTail!? StripeTail!? StripeTail?! StriiiiiipeTail!? Hello!? StripeTail?" I called. I was beginning to worry. Did he go past the water and get hurt? Did something from across the water....come here?
My thoughts began to play tricks on me. I began turning around in circles so that way nothing could get me from behind. I wanted to run, but I was afraid if I ran something will catch me. I felt sick from fear.
Be brave, be brave.... I let out a whining call "StripeTail?" So quiet, only an animal with great hearing would be able to hear. And once I uttered the words, something jumped at me. It grabbed my back and said something, I couldn't hear through my own meows of fear. I slipped out of its grasp and ran for my life. But it was faster than me. It jumped and pinned me to a rock, with its fluffy paws. I was as curled up as I could get with my paws pinned down. I didn't dare look. If I was going to die, I didn't want to see it. The thought made my stomach turn.
"Ahahahahaa!!!" I still couldn't hear what it was saying through my thoughts. But I heard a familiar voice. I lifted my head and looked. It looked like a tall grey blur through my tears.
So I wiped them with my paw, then look back up. "Wow, BlueWhiskers, I'm sorry, I wasn't really going to kill you" he said, laughing. It was StripeTail. I sat up. "You..." I was shocked he'd scare me like that.
"Hey, hey, don't look at me like that, I just jumped on you, you did the rest."
He said. That was true. My mind scares me a lot. I just stared at him, and he sighed. He wrapped his paw around me, and rolled us over. We started rolling down the hill we had been on. StripeTail's paws were around me the whole time, so I didn't get hurt. I was much smaller, and wouldn't be able to roll down myself without getting hurt. When we got to the bottom, I slipped out of StripeTail's grasp, and ran as he came after me. The air was full of laughter and happiness...Until..I heard a howl.
It was sudden, and rather creepy, so I jumped behind StripeTail. He was growling. I never heard him growl like that before. He only play growls, which is much less intimidating. StripeTail slowly walked back. I thought I might have been in his way, so I started moving to the side, but StripeTail's tail flicked in front of me, and pushed me back behind him.
I had never seen him this way. His ears were flat against his head, and his tail was smacking the air. He was growling, and his muscles were tense.
Then I saw something I had never seen before, only heard of in the stories mother would tell me. It was like a cat, but with a long muzzle, it was bigger, taller legs, less fur, bigger fangs; dogs.
StripeTail swung around to me with a dead serious face. "Stay here, don't move" he growled. "But where are you going?! You can't leave me!" I whisper yelled. "Ssh...their heading towards Mother" he said. I knew he would be in danger and I knew he wouldn't be able to fight them all off. There were about seven of them. He rubbed himself on me, and I rubbed back. "Be brave, strong, and never give up. Me and Mom might not always be around to protect you" StripeTail said, then ran the direction of the dogs. "Be brave, strong, and never give up" I repeated. "Be brave, strong" I said as I lowered myself to the floor. "And never give up" I ran after StripeTail and the dogs. The dogs were finally in view, and they were gaining on Mom.🐱
I was gaining on the dogs, and they were gaining on the dogs who were only metres from StripeTail and Mom. StripeTail must've got to Mother before the dogs did.
I thanked the earth for that.
Mother and StripeTail were frightened but still ran towards them and attacked them to protect herself. There were about seven dogs and they were about double the size of Mother, or more. StripeTail jumped onto one of their backs and bit its ear. The dogs swung its head around trying to get StripeTail off. Finally it got him off and StripeTail fell to the ground, but got right up. "You dogs killed my father, you won't kill anyone else!" StripeTail jumped onto another ones face ripping out its eyes and scaring up it's face. The dog howled in pain and another dog bit Stripetail's scruff and ripped him off the dogs face. The dog that StripeTail was attacking had no eyes now, and his face was saturated in blood. He ran past me, back to the water. I noticed it had missing fur on its side. Like it had been cut off by someone. The missing fur shaped into a word saying 'Dog'.The other dog was still holding StripeTail by the back of the neck. StripeTail spun around so his neck was loose from the dogs grasp. Then he jumped on its face and tore off an ear and an eye. That dog ran to the water along with the last dog. Only this dogs missing fur said something else. It said "Duke". They must have been names, but what could have cut their fur into names?
Now there were only five dogs left. But only two cats. No, three cats, three cats... I pushed myself to go closer. Mother's leg was bleeding, I couldn't tell how much through her fur but she couldn't get up. She was sitting, leaning against a rock. StripeTail was standing protectively in front of her. His face was bleeding, and his left ear was drooped down. I was finally close enough, but I had to wait for the right time. I was hiding on the rock Mother was leaning on.
I was glad the dogs didn't seem like they'd ever been in a real fight before.
I could see now, the other five dogs names. Hunter, Alpha, Jery, Fang and Trix. They were all about to attack, and Mom and StripeTail were cornered. Jerry jumped first, and I jumped too. I landed on his face. He was snarling, barking, growling, and trying to throw me off. I looked into its eyes and I felt like I wanted to let go. But I remembered. Be brave, be strong, and never give up. So I closed my eyes and shredded Jerry's face. He whined and threw me off and ran back into the water."BlueWhiskers!? What are you doing here?! Run!" Stripetail yelled. Mother heard and stood up to look. She gasped as she saw four dogs turn to me. I slightly whined as I saw their faces, but I quickly recovered from my fear.
"Bluewhiskers! Run! Quick!" StripeTail ran to me. I looked at him and considered running away. But I remembered his words again. And said them. "Be brave! Be strong! And never give up!" I ran and jumped on Trix. She swung her head around, then threw me to the floor. The four dogs surrounded me. I squealed and closed my eyes, before feeling a burning feeling in my fluffy tail.
I turned around and saw something no kitten should see, and felt something no kitten should feel. I yelled in pain. I saw Stripetail jump on Alpha's back, the one who had his jaws around my tail. And Mother jumped on Trix. Then I closed my eyes. And when I opened them, my eyes filled with tears. I saw all four dogs running to the water. And not one of them had a tail anymore. My vision started to blur, and Mother and StripeTail ran to me. Slowly, slowly, becoming two blurs of orange and grey. "Bluewhiskers!?" They called. My eyes started to close uncontrollably.
Then.. All I saw was black.
