Chapter 3
I didn't sleep well that night. All I could think about was the routine. I got up several times and made sure I knew exactly what I was doing. When I did manage to get to sleep my dreams were filled with me dancing and everyone laughing, as I trip or mess up moves over and over again.
I woke up with tears streaming down my face. I hadn't realised I'd been crying in the dream. I wiped the tears from my face and looked at the clock. It was 7.30 which meant it was half past 2 in the afternoon at home. As I didn't have to be at the dance studio until 10 I decide to go for a walk and get something to eat.
Once I was dressed and ready, I went into the office to see if Sally had the number of any cab companies I could ring. She did so I called the number and arranged for it to pick me up in 10 minutes.
As I waited in the car park I thought about where I should have something to eat. I decided to just find a café near the studio.
The cab pulled into the car park and I got in. The first thing I noticed was that the driver was the same man that had brought me from the airport to the motel.
"Hi." I said wondering if he recognised me.
"Hey, your that girl from yesterday." He said
"Yeah." I smiled
"So," he asked "where are you going today?"
I gave him the address of the studio and we drove away from the motel. While we were on the motorway he turned his head slightly and said "In case we see each other again my name's Mike."
"Hi Mike," I said "I'm Al."
"Nice to meet you Al. Is that short for something?"
"Yeah, my real name is Alexis but I'm not too keen on it so I go by Al. Do you think it's likely that we will see each other again?"
"No, there are thousands of cabs in LA." He said sounding a bit sorry for me. "The most likely thing is that we will never see each other again or we will and won't even remember each other."
I didn't respond to this I just sat there looking a little sad. I kind of liked talking to Mike. He was the first person I'd met in LA and it felt nice to see him again.
I could see the studio and my chest squeezed painfully in anticipation of what was coming. I looked at my phone before I got out. It was 8 o'clock, I had 2 hours to have a look around, have something to eat and get back to the studio. I could do that. I think. Just as I was about to close the door behind me, Mike said" Al just before you go I think Alexis is a lovely name"
"Thanks." What he said made me think about why I didn't like my name. I realised it wasn't that I didn't like it, it was just that everyone called me Al and I was used to it. I closed the door and set off down the street to see if there was a café, I could have breakfast in. After about 15 minutes I found a 50s style dinner. I love everything about the 50s so I went in. In sat in one of the bright red booths by the window. The dinner was mostly empty except for me; women in a suit drinking a cup of what looked like coffee and a couple sitting have breakfast.
The waitress came over to me and asked me what I wanted. I was missing home, so I ordered a full English breakfast and apple juice. As I was waiting for my food I thought about the 50s café back home and how I had to practically drag my friends in there, if I ever fancied something from Bee's.
The waitress came back over with my food and asked me if that was everything. When I said was, she walked away with a bored expression. I ate my food and thought about the last time I'd had one. It was only the day before yesterday, but somehow it felt like months. Everything was different now. I was in America, on the other side of the world from my best friends and I was about to do that hardest thing I've ever done. I thought about why I'd only had a proper breakfast 2 days ago. It was a sort of goodbye from Kelly and Lizzie. They had got up really early to see me off and surprised me with breakfast in bed. Thinking about made me miss them even more so I tried to think of something else.
