The next day I met Jade, Mia and Matt outside the dance studio at ten and we spend most of the day wondering aimlessly around shops. I didn’t buy anything, like I’d promised. Although I did see the perfect dress for the party and I made a mental note to come back alone.

After Ross was finished filming for the day, he picked me up and we went to his to work on my stage fright. We practised and sang together every day that week. Then on Saturday when we were sitting on my bed watching TV and talking about going to Manic that evening, he suddenly said “I think what need is some experience.”

“What do you mean experience?” I asked, shifting slightly so that I was facing him more.

“I mean. I think you should sing at Manic tonight.” I was in total shock. There was no way I was ready to sing in public!

“I don’t know.” I said hesitantly “I really don’t think I can do that.” His face fell.

“You might not think you are but I do.” He said confidently “Come on please. I know you can do it.” He pleaded.

“Okay, Okay but I’m not promising anything.”

“Great. You have to sing ‘I Will Never Love Again’.”

“Ohhh… I don’t know.” I said hesitantly.

“Please. You know I love that song.” He begged and gave me the puppy dog face once again.

“Oh…Alright!”  I gave in, with a sign but inside I could feel the anxiety was already building.

That night Ross picked me up just before eight. As we drove to the club we chatted about the upcoming night and I felt my stomach squeezing uncontrollably tight.

As we went into the club and met everyone else, I began to relax a little, but not much. Then, about ten minutes after we got there, Ross pulled me over to a man standing by a small wooden desk just off of the stage. As we got there, I asked him “Where are we doing?”

He didn’t need to answer however, because at that moment the tall, gangly man asked “Who wants to sign up?” In a, very fake, cheerful voice.

“She does.” Ross told him, pointing towards me.

“Name?” He said, leaning over a sheet of paper of the desk.

“Lexi Tailor.” Ross said, while I just stood there, not sure what to do.

“Karaoke or Instrument?”

“Instrument. Guitar.” I answered before he could ask which instrument I would be playing.

“Okay. You’re on at nine.”

“Thanks.” I said. I had about forty minutes to calm myself down before I had to sing. I could do that. When we went back over to the others they all started asking me if I was singing and what I was going to sing. I went really shy when they did this and Ross had to answer for me.

I spent the rest of the time dancing with Laura, Raini, Jade, Mia and the boys and telling myself not to worry about singing because I could do it and there was nothing to be afraid of.

Finally, it was five to nine and I had to get ready to go up on stage. My heart pounded frantically in my chest, as my friends escorted me to the front of the club where I was handed a guitar and told to wait while I was introduced. As I waited, I could feel myself starting to panic and noticed my breathing was getting quicker and shallower. Ross noticed but he wasn’t the only one! They all tried to help by reassuring me, saying I had nothing to worry about and telling me to just look at them and pretend there was no one else watching. I know I have nothing to worry about with my friends even though they’ve never heard me sing but the problem was they were part of the problem.
