The moment he was gone I turned and ran to the office door and was pleased to find that it was unlocked. I shoved it open and dashed across the empty room and through the backdoor that led to the courtyard. Once I was out there I went straight to the phone box. I picked up the phone and it dawned on me I had no idea what time it was, and whatever time it was here it would be seven hours later at home.
I pulled my phone from the small bag that was clutched in my hand. It was just before midnight which meant it was about seven in the morning back home. I gave a slight sigh of relief Danny would be up by now as he always woke up at six. I was never really sure why he got up so early, as he didn’t have to be at work till nine. Danny designed the covers children’s books. He was a fantastic artist. The things he could draw just from memory was incredible. Personally I though the job was a waste of his talent as the drawings he did were really only silly squiggles, but I’d told him this many times and he never listened. He said it was the only that he’s ever gonna get that lets him draw all day even if they silly little things.
I dialled the number but it went to answer phone so I tried again. This time he answered on the second ring.
“Hello.” He said but he sounded as if he’d only just woken up.
“Hey, it’s me.”
“Hiya.”
“Hi. I know it’s early but I just got back to the motel and I had to tell you about today.”
“What do you mean you just got back? It must be like midnight there.”
“Yeah it is. I went to a club with some new friends I made today” I said kind of pleased that I could tell him I wasn’t on my own anymore.
“That’s great! I’m glad you made some friends. So I take it everything went well then.
“Oh yeah it was great. At first I was really nervous but once I got in there and started to get into it everything was fine.” I proceeded to tell him about the rest of the day but when I got to the part about the dancing with Ross for some reason it felt very strange, I didn’t understand why it didn’t feel right. I hadn’t really had much experience in the boy department but the few times I’d been interested in someone or they were interested in me I had always talked to Danny about but something had changed. Maybe it was because something was different this time something that I’d never experienced before.
“An then Ross dropped me off and I went to call you.” I finished.
“Well I’m glad you’re had a good day and you’re enjoying yours elf.” Something had changed in his voice but I couldn’t quite work out what it was.
“Hey before I forget, why weren’t up when I called? You’re always up before seven.”
“I’ve been getting up later the last couple of days because I’ve needing more sleep lately.”
“Oh I just thought it was strange.” I looked at the time a realised it was getting later and I had work in the morning
“I better go to bed,” I said as I yawned “It’s getting very late.”
“Yeah I need to get ready for work anyway.”
“Well, have a good day and I’ll speak to you tomorrow.”
“I hope you have a good day too.”
“OK then I’ll talk to you tomorrow. I love you. Bye.”
“Love you too. Bye.”
I put the phone back on the hook and slowly walked to my room. Once I was inside I walked straight to the bed and collapsed with my feet hanging off of the edge.
