When I finally woke up my surroundings were silent. It was so dark that I couldn't even see what was in front of me/. why was I sleeping on a cold cement floor with just a sleeping bag and a few blankets covering me?/I should be at Nights Edge back in my dorm room and sleeping soundly in my warm bed with the sound of Claire's snores filling up the silence...
Just then all of the events that happened last night flooded into my mind...
Fear crept up my spinal cord and into my mind. Was Aaron still alive? Suddenly I was fully awake. I pushed the sleeping bag of me and without turning on any lights rushed out the door. I had to get to the roof.
When I finally found the doors to the staircase I pushed them open and bega hurdling up many flights of stairs. I think there were about seven flights before I hit the top. The entire way, I was tripping over my own feet. A few times I almost tripped and fell.
The door to the roof was iron and heavy looking and it held an alarm that appeared to no longer work.now I don't have to worry about Daniel hearing the alarm and rushing it to the roof. Pushing all my force against the heavy door, I let out a grunt as it opened.
The morning was fresh. The skies were still orange and pink, and I could see the sun rising up in the distance. It was cooler out too it had to be at least thrity degrees.winter would be here soon. Give it a few more weeks and it would be snowing father up north and away from Charleston. I haven't seen snow in years
I stood on the roof burying my fists into my hoodie and trying to keep warm. As I neared the edge my feet made the gravel roof beneath me crackle. I peered into the distance. The alley that the fighting had gone on was empty, it looked like nithign had happened. There was no bodies.
The air around me suddenly got chiller then I felt the atmosphere cool down by about ten degrees.my teeth chattered I was about to retreat back into the warm building but then a flapping noise came from behind me. I closed my eyes and let out a sigh of relief ready to bury myself in Aaron's arms.
I turned around and there he was floating a foot above the ground. He creased to a stop on the gravel ground and stepped towards me. his eyes looked curious and sincere as if he had missed me more than I missed him. I could smell him.he smelled like laundry detergent and sleep.
Before I could stop himself my arms were around him.
He pulled me close. His muscles felt stiff and warm against my body. Instead of putting my face in his shoulder I buried my face within the feathers on his wings. They were the softest things I ever felt. I let my fingers skim the tips of each white fragment of his wing. As I did I felt his breath hitch and his body shiver.
"I thought I would never see you again...." I muttered. I had meant to sound strong, but instead my voice was strained.
He shook his head. "You will see me no matter how long it might be until you do." His voice sounded deeper and more vibrant than usual.
He stood back and rested his hands firmly on my shoulders. All of my muscles suddenly became less tense. It was all about touch between us, he touched me so delicantly as if I was glass but yet his touch was the thing that healed all my pain. All I would ever need was his glass touch.
"Is Cass dead?" I asked him.
Aaron shook his head. "I don't kill unless I have to. Believe It or not Cass and his group are a minor problem...." Then he met his eyes and spoke to me. "Trust me,someof my problems are much bigger and I have to protect you from them."
Hoplesness Aaron was always trying to protect me from things and keep me sage and keep things from me. all I felt when he said stuff like that was hoplessness.
