15. And Now We're Here

Edward stares at Maymay's sleeping figure while he drives on their way to their grandparents' province. They haven't slept. They talked all night. It was a whirlpool of emotions for both Maymay and Edward the entire time. They both felt lost, sad, angry, and betrayed. After all, it was a night that the truth was finally revealed.

Whoever said that 'the truth will set you free' clearly didn't have many truths hidden from them. Edward grabs Maymay's phone once again and stares at their beautiful daughter.

"Ella Jane" he mutters with a bitter smile painted on his face.

"Ella Jane? Why Ella Jane?" he asked while tears roll down his cheeks--when sadness took over his initial anger.

Maymay tried reaching for his face, but hesitates midway as guilt starts to eat her up. "Same initials as her dad." she whispered.

"Ahh.. so, just in case I don't come back in your life anymore, you would still have your own EJ?" he asked, anger becoming apparent in his voice again.

Maymay stared at his eyes, "I never knew if you were coming back. What if you actually settled in Canada? What if you suddenly fell for someone new there and started to build a life with them?" she started to cry.

"Can you stop crying?" Edward asked, as anger started to take over him. "That's besides the point. Fact is, you...you could've told me about Ella Jane.. and..." he stuttered. "...and things would've been different now." he sighed.

"You left." she shortly answers.

"Like I said, that's besides the point--"

"What do you mean? If you hadn't left, things would've been different right now. We would actually be a family. You, me, and our child--Ella Jane." she cries. "You left me all alone. I only had S beside me because I couldn't risk having our mutual friends tell you. Your love for me should've been enough.. should've been strong enough for you to come back."

"Ella would've been a strong reason." he mutters. "Do you really think after finding out about this? After finding out that you kept my child from me, I could still love you?" he asks.

Maymay's eyes widened as shock hit her. But mostly, it is the pain that began to spread from her heart to her entire being. She tried to gather her wits, even when she thinks she could hear her heart shattering at that moment. "I am not asking for your love. And Ella Jane is either my daughter or our daughter, not just yours."

"Oh yeah, try fighting for her in court. Are your forgetting that I am Attorney Edward Barber?" he asks.  "And believe me Maymay, you wouldn't want to face me in court, because I never lose." he adds.

"Are you saying you will take away my daughter from me? The only reason I survived after you left me Edward was her. If not for Ella--" she begins to sob.

And that was the end of it.
Maymay broke down in front of Edward, and all that Edward wanted to do then was enveloped her in his arms. But, he didn't.

As they enter the familiar town where they both spent their summer days. As well as where their love for each other bloomed, a bittersweet nostalgic feeling begin to hit them. The place looks different already, but a feeling of familiarity is still there.
