Just Sleep

"It's okay." I whispered, rubbing his chest.

"I don't want to sleep anymore." He said in the most pitiful voice I've ever heard.

"You don't have to." I soothed and he nodded. I checked the time, my phone said,

8:28

"We can get up if you want, it's 8:28." I said, he nodded again and got up. I followed him out of his room and down the stairs, I noticed he didn't stand up straight like he used to. He used to walk with a sense of superiority, now it was a slouch of fear and exhaustion. We entered the kitchen to meet Jack, Ashley, Rian, and Dylan all looking exactly like we did. Tired.

"Did you have a good night?" Jack asked with his eyes closed as he took a sip of his coffee.

"It was spectacular." I replied, motioning for Alex to sit down. I fixed his and my coffee and sat next to him.

"Damn you guys look awful." Ashley said, not that she looked any better. We all had dark bags under our eyes and just a general sluggish attitude.

"How long do they last?" Alex asked, I looked over to see that he had put his head on his arms and had laied them on the table.

"About a week. Sad thing is, it'll take a few days for the powers to arrive." Jack informed.

"We should plan to make a move against the Lawlers the day after you get your powers." I said, I was so tired that speaking was difficult. Everyone nodded. We heard screaming somewhere in the house.

"That'll be Zack." Rian mumbled. A few minutes later, Zack and my dad walked into the kitchen looking as cruddy as we did.

"Good morning" He said unenthusiastic.

"Yo." Ashley responded. Zack sat next to her with a groan.

"That sucked." He said.

"You're damn right." Alex agreed, his voice muffled due to his head still being in his arms. I reached over and rubbed his back for a second, it was probably my lack of sleep but I thought I felt him relax. Rian explained how it'll take a few days for the heightened abilities to arrive and the dreams to end, to which Zack replied, "Fan-fucking-tastic."

Alex and I had gone upstairs he was strumming a few chords on his guitar and I was on my phone. After a long time spent debating, I asked the question I'd been dying to ask all morning,

"Hey Lex?" I asked.

"Lex?" He replied.

"You're just now figuring out I've been calling you that all morning. Anyway that's beside the point. I have a question."

"Alright what is it?" He asked with a laugh.

"What did you dream about?" I asked quietly. He visibly stiffened.

"My past." He answered uneasily.

"Oh." I replied, not sure whether to press him more.

"I was torturing again." He nearly whispered.

"Alex." I whispered.

"I know." he replied, going back to his guitar. Our silence had grown uncomfortable.

"I'll be back okay?" I said. Alex gave me a nod of acknowledgement. I walked out of his room and headed for Jack's. I knocked on his door.

"Yo." He answered.

"May I enter your chambers?" I asked with a giggle.

"You may." He answered. I opened the door and saw him playing his guitar too.

"Did you know that we both share a special friend in this house who is doing the exact same thing you are?" I asked, referencing Alex.

"If the person we're talking about is an arrogant little fuck then I'm not surprised." He answered cheekily. "What do you need?" He asked, patting the bed, signalling that I should sit down.

"You aren't going to like my question." I said quietly, sitting next to him.

"You're going to ask me what I dreamed about." Jack stated. I sighed.

"I wouldn't ask unless I needed to know."

Jack looked very sad all of a sudden.

"I dreamed about the worst day of my life...The day I slowly bled a girl to death. She was nineteen and her name was Abigail." He answered, his shoulders hung and his eyes started filling up with tears. He brushed them away quickly.

"Anything else?" He asked sadly.

"Yeah." I murmured before pulling him into a comforting hug.

I asked Zack and Rian the same question. Zack dreamed about a family he'd killed and Rian about a girl that he killed right in front of her husband. All of them confirmed that it was the worst day of their lives, which is the best news I've ever heard. Because if they can show remorse for doing something that terrible, then they really have changed.
