" Marlene McKinnon?"
Nicole nodded her head as she grabbed a sandwich from the tray in front of her, " Right twat that one."
Evelyn's lip twitched, " She didn't seem to like me did she?"
Nicole snorted, " Join the club,"
Evelyn took her bag and grabbed her Potions book out, " I'm guessing you two know each other?" she asked.
Nicole groaned, " Sadly," she took another bite of her sandwich and shook her head, " Like me, she's a pureblood, and y'know purebloods- they don't like their kids playing with the riff-raff- no offense."
Evelyn gave a breathy laugh, " Offense taken,"
Nicole rolled her green eyes and continued, " So we only had so many play pals, usually cousins, but all my cousins live somewhere in Norway, Sweden, Finland- eh somewhere over there, my father hates his family so I ended up playing with the McKinnons and Blacks."
" I didn't like them, too snobby for me so I refused to go."
Evelyn felt herself begin to pity the girl, she had never felt lonely as she had so many cousins, Edwin in particular.
" Sounds like it sucked," she offered.
" Yeah pretty depressing."
The two finished their lunch and headed out the door and off to their next class, Defense Against the Dark Arts. They asked a nearby portrait if they knew the way to the classroom, it turned out that they knew a shortcut.
The portrait swung open and the two girls entered hesitantly. " This is so cool," Nicole whispered as she traced the ancient brick with her finger.
Evelyn could only nod, " Pretty dark too."
Nicole laughed, You afraid of the dark Truelove?"
Evelyn shrugged, " Not the dark, but what's in it."
The two kept walking until they came to a door that turned out to be another portrait. Nicole and Evelyn pushed it opened and ended up pushing too hard and falling out of the wall, startling the Lily girl in Gryffindor.
The two ignored the girl's light glare and began laughing at themselves while getting up.
They stepped into the classroom and sat in the front row despite Nicole's reluctance. Remus, Sirius, Peter, and James walked in. Evelyn watched as the boys entered and waved to Remus, she also noticed James and Sirius had some sort of swagger to their walk, which for some reason annoyed her.
The room slowly began to fill up, and Prof. Rossler came in. " Good morning class, as you know I'm Professor. Rossler and this is Defense Against the Dark Arts." Rosser was a rather attractive man who seemed to be in his late 30's, he had dark hair and olive skin with a salt and pepper beard. " Okay now for this semester we will have partners of different houses." Many groaned, including Evelyn, but got up none the less.
Rossler grabbed a list from his desk and began speaking, " Okay Evans and Blanton- Potter and Macmillian- Pettigrew and Guice- Lupin and Bodes....," he kept going on until Evelyn heard her name " Truelove and Black."
The boy huffed, but Evelyn said nothing and sat down beside him." So how's that cat of yours." he asked. Evelyn gave a chuckle. " Still angry with the world,"
Sirius smirked. " I can relate."
By the end of the class, Evelyn decided Sirius wasn't so bad but was like James. Had his head too far up his ass, but he was okay she guessed. They had flying lessons in ten minutes with the Gryffindors, so Sirius and his group left with Evelyn and Nicole.
Evelyn knew James felt bad for what happened at breakfast, and she also knew he was too proud to admit he was wrong. So she waited. When nothing happened she looked over at him and saw that he was trying his hardest not to look at her, she sighed.
" You know this is where you apologize," she said looking forward. James groaned and ran a hand through his already rumpled hair. " Look Ev... I'm...sorry." he struggled. Evelyn looked over at him with a grin. " See it didn't kill you, well it seemed to have almost," she said. Remus had a smile on his face, as James glared at Evelyn. " Bugger off Ev." he huffed while crossing his arms.
Evelyn laughed and the corridor that was already filled with sunlight seemed to brighten even more. Sirius had a small smile on his face, this to him was just marvelous, he had friends. That were not his cousins or little brother. He felt free for once in his life, and he didn't want to ever go back.
Evelyn was introduced to Peter. She noticed the way his hands twitched and how his eyes never made contact with her because they were darting around. She recognized anxiety well enough but he was a sweet boy.

As they mounted the brooms Evelyn felt a rush of adrenaline and excitement. She hovered a few feet before taking off. Evelyn had only flown on toy brooms that were charmed to hover a few feet above the ground. The wind felt amazing, it was exhilarating. She flew higher and higher. It just all seemed to fall into place, lean right fly right, lean left fly left, lean forward going forward. She noticed that she had gone way out of her boundaries and flew back quickly.
She saw James was already doing great, but Nicole seemed to be refusing to get off the ground.
" Come on Nic- it's fun!" Evelyn shouted to her friend. Nicole smiled for a split second but then frowned at her friend. " Maybe to you but I prefer my feet on the ground!" she shouted back. Evelyn laughed but didn't push the subject.
!
Classes were over, and everyone was heading to the Great Hall. " This is officially the best Monday I've ever experienced!" Nicole chuckled. Evelyn readily agreed. " I know right."
The two girls ate and talked with their housemates. Evelyn was beyond happy, overjoyed with the new experiences really. She didn't know it now but a dark wizard was on the rise. Striking fear into the hearts of all he met. His name was Voldemort.
