Evelyn glanced at herself in the mirror and frowned, why had she accepted? Did she find Sirius handsome? Of course, who didn't? But she feared this was a huge mistake. She wondered if this would ruin the progress they had made in the endeavor of being friends. Evelyn loved Sirius and cherished their friendship, and she wanted to be closer to him, but she didn't know if she wanted to this close.
Some part of her wanted to go, but she didn't know why that was. A small part of her thought it was for a shallow purpose, but she knew herself to be better than that. She was her mother's daughter, after all.
The brunette wore a dark mustard-colored sweater tucked into her flared jeans and winter boots. She put a light coat of mascara on her eyes and glossed her lips.
'There,' she thought, ' done.'
Her brown eyes glanced toward the clock on the wall, and she smiled slightly. It was time to go.
-
Evelyn found Sirius leaning against one of the stonewalls beside the entrance. He looked up and waved, " You ready to go?" he asked.
Evelyn nodded, shoving her hands into her pockets, " Yeah, let's go ahead and get a carriage to ourselves, yeah?"
Sirius gestured for her to lead the way.
Evelyn made her way to one of the front carriages and pet the threstral, " This one will do nicely," she quipped before hopping up into a seat.
Sirius raised an eyebrow, " Er- why did you pet the air?" he asked with a slightly concerned look.
Evelyn felt herself blush, " Oh- Uh... I'll tell you, but...but first, stop looking at me like I'm insane,"
Sirius's eyes widened and he wiped the look off his face, " I haven't the slightest clue as to what you mean, love,"
Evelyn rolled her eyes, " Whatever c'mon now."
Sirius made his way up the steps of the carriages and sat across from Evelyn, " So please regale me, Truelove,"
Evelyn glanced over to the opposite side of the courtyard," Y'know I've been here for six years, and I'm still not used to the snow,"
Sirius followed her eyes and landed on a small snow rabbit hopping towards the Forbidden Forrest. If it hadn't been for his ears being tinted black at the top, Sirius wouldn't have been able to make him out.
" You shared something very personal with me the other night, Sirius," she said softly, her eyes not leaving the rabbit, " And I'm about to do the same with you,"
The carriages began moving and Sirius hadn't even noticed the other students he had been so focused on Evelyn. She had a way of commanding someone's attention. Ever since first year when she would read aloud in class or even ask a question, all eyes would be on her. Her voice always held emotion.
" Did you know the carriages are pulled by threstrals?" she asked with a small smile before looking at him.
He shook his head, " I thought they just pulled themselves?"
" No, do you remember back when we were first years and my mom made the front page for fighting off some death eaters?"
Sirius chuckled and nodded, motioning for her to continue.
" Well while we were in Diagon Alley I saw an aurora get hit with a green light...and he didn't get back up,"
Suddenly it clicked. Threstrals were seen as bad omens because only those who had seen death could see them. A chill ran up Sirius's spine," I..." he wasn't sure what to say, he wanted to tell her he was sorry and she shouldn't have witnessed that but he didn't want her to think he was pitying her.
