'Maya's PoV:

I immediately blinked my eyes open, surprised to find Erin, Alby and Newt surrounding me.

"You stupid shank," Erin snickered as she gently stroked my head, "I'm impressed how a tiny girl like you survived a shucking fall like that."

I tried to sit up but the pain in my back was too much. Erin assisted me as I groaned. Newt handed me a glass of water.

"Where's Winston?" I asked after I consumed my drink.

The room fell silent for a bit. The three of them exchanged looks, as if trying to figure out who'll answer me.

"Is anyone gonna answer or-"

"He's in the slammer." Alby said, crossing his arms.

"The hell's he doin' there?"

"The hell were you doin' on that tree?"

I clenched my teeth and exhaled heavily, feeling guilty that Winston was punished for my stupidity. I knew that branch would cause me to fall but I still did it just to test if it would really happen. Dumbest idea ever. The strange surge warned me about my falling demise. But I ignored it anyway.

"Alby, none of this is his fault," I reasoned, "That was my idea to, to begin with."

"Of course it was. We know that." Alby replied.

"See? I told you she'd be mad. I warned you." Erin both glared at Newt and Alby.

"Maya," Newt finally spoke, "After your recovery, you will no longer be a slicer. The keepers decided to make you a track-hoe. In that way I could make sure you're not gonna do something stupid and get hurt."

"I don't wanna be a stupid track-hoe!"

"Well there's nothing you can do about it." Newt retorted.

"Bastards!" I shouted and threw the empty glass across the room, startling everyone.

"Hey!" Newt yelped. Even Alby looked like he wasn't expecting me to lash out.

I kicked the covers away from my feet and attempted to stand up, instead stumbling and falling on the floor. Newt quickly scooped me in his arms while Erin helped assisting me back to the bunk.

"Erin, make her calm down. We'll talk later." Alby requested before leaving the room. Erin nodded and clutched my hands in an attempt to cool my temper. It worked.

"S-s-sorry." I stared at the broken glass pieces, scattered on the floor. "I didn't know why I did that."

"You're lucky you landed on a pile of hay or else your spine would've snapped like chicken bones." Erin explained.

"Risked her life for a bloody goat," Newt chimed in, "Wonder where she'd go from there?"

"Shut up!" I spat back.

"The both of you need to talk. I'll see you later." She patted my shoulder before leaving the room.

For a while, the room was silent. I remained seated on my bunk while Newt was beside me. His eyes, they looked tired and hurt. I wouldn't blame him though. I've been nothing but trouble for the past days.

"Winston's supposed to-"

"This was your idea, wasn't it?" I immediately cut him off, glaring at him. "If, if, if you weren't the second-in-command, I would've punched you right now."
