In French, there are many ways of saying 'what'?
》Qu'est-ce que/ Que- This is the basic way of saying 'what?'. With que, invert the verb, with qu'est-ce que, simply write the verb as normal.
Qu'est-ce qu'il fait?- What is he doing?
Que fait-il?- What is he doing?》Quoi- this is how you'd say 'what' if you don't understand someone. You can also use it at the end of the question to avoid inverting or using 'qu'est-ce que"
Tu manges quoi?- You are eating what?》Quel(le)- this way usually follows the verb 'to be' in English.
Quelle heures est-il?- What time is it?
It can also follow other verbs in French, but those verbs still translate as 'to be'.
