The Subjunctive is perhaps one of the most confusing areas of French grammar. It is a special type of verb form, called a mood, and it's used when expressing doubt, necessity, unreality, possibility, and many more.

There are two main conditions for using the subjunctive:

1) There must be two different subjects in the sentence
E.g. Il faut que tu fasses ton lit- It's necessary that you make your bed/ you have to make your bed

If the two subjects are the same, use the infinitive.
Il faut faire mon lit- It is necessary to make my bed/ I must make my bad
NOT Il faut que je fasse mon lit

2) The expression must end in que or qui
Il est important que vous commenciez à travailler- It's important that you start working
