The plan went well at first.
But I had not anticipated the angry dance party on the roof of a moving van. So, yeah, that was a problem.
I listen for a moment as Peter finishes melting a hole in the metal about three-and-a-half feet tall and three feet wide. Just big enough to hop out of, small enough for the guards not to notice right away.
I still hear Gray and Drill Sergeant arguing. It sounds pretty heated. I would warn the captain to shut up already or he's going to be burnt guard a la mode, but it kind of goes against my plan of stealth.
"We should do it now," Myria says, staring at the wall. "Their backs are momentarily turned away from us."
"Then let's do it," I say.
"Why do we always have a plan that involves taking huge-" Peter begins.
"Now!" I say, and lead by example like the good leader I am. I jump out of the still-red-hot hole and land crouched on the blacktop of the road.
Peter sighs. "-risks."
He jumps out after me, then helps Myria out. We sneak along the side of the van, crouching down under the tinted windows.
I feel a little nervous, not just because we're literally next to a van of guards that will shoot first and ask questions later, but because this is a road. Cars and trucks alike are zooming past us, some feeling extremely close. Most of them don't bother about seeing what we're doing.
One dude gives me a peace sign when he drives past and I see him say, Good luck! I salute him back. I love the people of Atlanta.
We reach the end of the van, and just as I suspected, the twin doors are locked shut. I fiddle with the door handles, and eventually I hear a sharp Click! and just like that, the doors are unlocked.
Just to look super cool, I do a roundhouse kick to open the doors. I nearly break the doors and my foot in the process, but you should've seen the looks on the guards' faces!
One guard's eyes go wide and he yells the obvious. "The prisoners have es-"
Thump!
That was the sound of Myria doing a perfect side kick that sent him flying onto Alex's lap.
"Oof!" Alex groans, trying to wriggle Mr. Obvious off of him. "Get him.......off of me!"
I surge and a beam of ice hits the second guard in the chest. He starts to freeze in place, from the feet up. His mouth is frozen in mid-yell.
"Jamie," Jake says, and I look over. His face is worn and tired, but he still manages a weak smile. "You still continue to surprise me."
I laugh and wrap my arms around his neck. "At this point, you shouldn't be surprised anymore." I mean down and we kiss, relieved to be back together.
"Although that was a very cute moment of Jakie in action," Raina cuts in, "I would deeply appreciate it if you freed us from this uncomfortable position we're in."
"What did I tell you about that ship name," Jake mutters.
"I've got you," Peter says.
He and Myria go around and press the release button on the tables' control panels, and the Elementals are finally free.
"Now, we just have to figure out how to get out of here," Lenae says. "We need to find Obsidian. He has the van."
A smile slowly spreads across both Peter and Jake's face. It worries me.
