In a time of heavy conflict and war, an organization was created in order to protect Earth from all threats, local and intergalactic. Its core warriors, those known as Paladins, were the chosen few with the ability to control over one of the 4 elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. This organization, named Voltron, was spearheaded by a commanding leader and their second-in-command, who also doubled as the trainer for the warriors. Their headquarters, the Castle of Lions, was betrayed by one of their own, the fire Paladin, who turned on his team and fled with his family.

The other members, believing their cause was one worth fighting for, attempted to continue without their companion element. Initially there seemed to be no issue until an uprising occurred, killing millions. The leader, Zarkon, requested one thing from the heroes: turn themselves in to get executed. Zarkon felt as if the only threat he faced was them, but if he could manage to kill them, he would become unstoppable.

Unfortunately for him, the elements had a secret- they could be contained and hidden. Hidden until worthy new heroes would be able to find them and take back control of the planet. The elementalist could strip their powers from their very beings and hide it safely until those who were meant to find them did. But they could not do it without their 4th companion.

They pleaded with him, days of negotiation and assurances thrown towards him in order to sway his opinion. The Paladins, beginning to believe their efforts to be fruitless, were finally granted their wish as the fire Paladin realized if he did not do the ritual, his whole planet and family would die. Being reassured of his family's safety, he bid them goodbye, keeping it secret that he would be dying at the hands of Zarkon soon enough.

So they all got together and performed the ceremony to extract their powers from themselves and each other. It was a painful process, but they knew what had to be done

The team then proceeded to do the only thing possible and turned themselves in, ending team Voltron. The powers, divided into different orbs and spread across the world, were lost from humanity. Zarkon's regime continued for 10,000 years, until a Cuban boy, casually skinny dipping all alone, went too far into the ocean.
