She walked away, straight into the open arms of a cold winter night.
The snow crunched under her feet, adding sound effects to the breaking of her heart deep inside her chest.

She remembered just last night how the snow had seemed magical and how now it seemed sour, mocking her by swirling down around her, just as her world fell apart.

She knew that her house was way too far away to walk, but was too dazed to find a method of transport to get home.

All she could think about was his eyes, glistening with tears as he said goodbye.

"If he was that upset about breaking it off, why did he do it?", she whispered. Her breath made clouds in the dark, frozen air.

She regretted wearing his hoodie. Firstly because it wasn't warm enough and secondly because it smelled like him. That smell she had inhaled too many times to count. The smell that intoxicated her, made her feel safe. Until now.

Now it made her feel sick.
"Long distance", he had gulped, only half looking into her eyes.

"I'll be on tour for months", he said.

"We can work it. Phone calls, Skype. I can come to some shows", she tried to reason. To her it seemed like she was still fighting, when he had already given up.

"I've already asked if you can come with us. Joe said no", he answered, brushing off all her suggestions.

It was then the hurting started.
"No. We can do it. I know we can. We're strong", she reasoned desperately.

"I'm sorry. I don't think I can do it"

"Is this it? Are we over?" She still couldn't believe.

"I'm so sorry". He repeated.

He tried to hug her, pull her close and rest his chin on her head, just like always.
She pulled away quickly. He stepped back, pain visible in his eyes, but if he was hurting half as much as she was he wouldn't have said any of it.

"Sorry?!", she snapped angrily. The tears were falling down her cheeks rapidly, but had barely formed behind his eyelids.

"Is that all you can say? Two years. I've given two years of my life to you and all you can say is sorry!?", she was angry, hurting and desperate to change his mind and make him stay yet she couldn't make herself be gentle with him.

He still didn't speak but by now a tear had escaped and was silently gliding down those high cheekbones.

"You can't break up with me for something this stupid. Not after so long!", the confusion was setting in, there had to be another reason.

She asked but he said there wasn't, it was purely the distance.

He didn't say much, he let her shout and cry and ask and didn't try to hug her again.

He said sorry, multiple times, but it was too late for sorry and sorry couldn't tape her heart back together.

So eventually she stormed out and down the road, slamming his door behind her.

Her chest felt like it was caving in. She couldn't breath. If she could move maybe she'd fall or run, instead all she could do was panic until the attack passed.

She wanted him to follow her, to cry and get on his knees and beg her to stay. She wanted him to say he made a massive mistake and she was the best thing in his life, he couldn't let her walk away.

Instead he sat in the living room. He winced at the sound of the door slamming, his head rested in his hands and his tears fell to the floor. He regretted hurting her, but it was for the best, the distance would hurt her more, when he wouldn't have time for her.

He believed what he did was for the best, he honestly wanted to spare her months of waiting for him to call, months of wishing he was home.

He spent the night crying into his mothers arms, she didn't find her wAy home until 3am

She wandered the streets, confused and hurt and terrified of an uncertain future. A future she thought she would spend with him.

He tried to spare her months of waiting for him to call but instead she now ached for his voice even more. She spent weeks on end wishing he'd say he wanted her back.

He did want her back. He also wanted her to move on and find someone with a stable job and a certain future. Someone she wouldn't have to wait for.

She just didn't understand and maybe she never would.
