I walked into my new school and I could feel everyone's eyes instantly on me, even worse I could hear them whispering about me like they had never seen someone with a walking stick before. I lost most of my sight eight years ago when my parents died, I say most but I'm almost totally blind for most of the time since using my power was not always an option.

"Everybody this is Artemis Max. She's new here, so be nice and help her out when you can," my teacher said as I finally walked through the classroom door, it would take me a while to get to know the layout for the school.

"What's her problem?" a girl with a quite interesting aura asked. I've seen her turquoise aura a few times, but it's still not the most common. I see auras, more importantly I can see people's permanent auras (those are auras that are near impossible to change). This is what I see when I'm not using my power, it helps with knowing where people are, but inanimate objects do not have auras so it doesn't help with everything.

"I'm blind," I replied like it wasn't already obvious by the metal walking stick I had in my hand.

"Are you serious?" she asked, she really wasn't the smartest person in the class. I was used to these reactions by now, but still I missed my friends who knew me better than anyone, but they were all at their homes or at the camp. The teacher, Ms. Florence, was getting annoyed.

"Bailey, be nice. Yes everyone Artemis is blind. So I want you all to behave yourselves," Ms. Florence replied.

Then I heard someone say, "This is going to be fun." I couldn't pin point where the person was since I didn't know the room well enough and who said it had been muttering.

"May I say something?" I asked, I wasn't about to be messed with on my first day here. I had to make this school work or I was going back to the camp.

"Of course Artemis," Ms. Florence replied, I had already figured out she was a kind of teacher.

"Just because I am blind does not mean I am stupid or that I'm deaf," I deadpanned as I "looked" across the room hoping the person who made the comment got that I was talking about them.

"How did you hear me?" a guy asked and I smiled, so at least he wasn't thickheaded.

"To put it simply when you lose something another thing gains, I lost sight so my hearing improved to make up for the loss," I replied. "Where is my seat?"

"Uh... next to Bailey. Second row three seats over," my teacher replied. She didn't need to tell me where, but then I guess she thought she needed to. While I was walking someone put their foot out in front of me and I tripped and fell to the ground. Although I could "see" where a person was, doesn't mean I could see what they were doing, auras are centralized, so I can't see the movements of limbs.

Everyone was laughing except Bailey she came to help me. "Are you okay?" she asked as she grabbed my hands and helped me stand up.

"Yeah, I'm fine thank you. I guess I'm just a little nervous, usually I'm not that clumsy," I replied loud enough for the entire class to hear and they got quiet. Bailey handed me my walking stick and then walked me to my seat.

"Why are you covering for Stacy?" Bailey whispered when we sat down.

"It's not very smart to make enemies on the first day is it?" I asked in return.

"I guess not," she replied.

"It's okay, don't worry about it I've dealt with worse, trust me," I said.

"I don't know much worse than Stacy, but I guess if you say so, though I'll hang around and help you, if you don't mind," she replied. If you think Stacy is bad, you haven't seen anything.
