Ale returned with coffees for everyone while I was passed out. Eddie disappeared for a bit, saying he needed to grab something, and Gale stuck around to watch me.
By the time I woke up, the coffee was cold and Eddie was back. His eyes were still red from crying and I poked at them lazily, all my earlier energy gone. "You need sleep," I mumbled. He looked like he could benefit from a few good moments of rest.
"Exactly! He's been spending the past twenty-four hours watching you like a hawk," Gale agreed. "Ed, you should go back to the apartment-"
"No. I'm staying with Clemmy," our friend interrupted without missing a beat.
He was hunched over in the chair next to my bed, still rubbing my knuckle while occasionally checking something on his phone. I wanted to ask what was so interesting on there but talking drained me. Now that the drugs the nurse had given me were starting to leave my system, the pain was returning. My mind didn't feel as scattered anymore. I missed that numb feeling.
"Get back on the bed with me and take a power nap," I suggested, patting the empty space beside me.
"Gale doesn't think that's appropriate."
"Because it's not, Eddie!" the ginger boy pointed out, sliding down onto the edge of my bed near my feet. I curled my toes, wincing at how stiff they felt from the brief lack of use. "Sorry, but I want to avoid the possibility of Kyla walking in and finding Clem cuddled up to another man."
"It's just Eddie, though," I huffed, looking to my- as he called himself- best friend. His face twisted, only for a slight second. If I hadn't really been staring, I wouldn't have noticed. "Ed is a good boy. He'd never... never do anything sketchy."
"Right." Gale playfully gave Eddie an eyebrow wiggle that Mr. Curls returned with a groan. "Okay, but seriously. Eddie, you need to avoid getting your ass kicked. The last thing we need is a brawl between the two of you. This love triangle is already complicated enough."
"What love triangle?" I yawned, feeling ready to drop from consciousness once again. Enough of the drugs were still in my system, I guess.
But that bugged me; there was a love triangle here? Who was Gale referring to? What on earth did it have to do with Kyla beating up my Eddie?
...I mean, my Kyla beating up Eddie!
Yeah, that was what I meant.
Ah, damn drugs.
"It's nothing, Clemmy," Eddie assured me, taking the empty spot to my left despite Gale's concerns. I took his hand and rubbed our palms together. "Gale's just being his weird self."
"Aw, you think I'm weird?" Gale giggled, but he was lacking his usual, teasing edge. There was something there, something more that I wasn't seeing.
I decided to ignore it, too tired. I dropped my head down against Eddie's shoulder, ready to catch some more z's.
