Peter is 18 in this, okay? Thanks ✌🏻☆★☆★☆
It should never have been allowed to happen. I had no idea why it was even suggested let alone left to have its inception- But it did. Now, for the first time ever, the United States Of America was having a one-off Purge.
One night. Twelve hours. Everything was legal. From robbery to rape to murder. Everything was legal for twelve continuous hours.
And it terrified me. I'd spend the week before panicking, hearing whispers throughout school about some kids that were planning to get together and do some illegal shit rather than huddling in their homes like the rest of us.
Peter had suggested that I stay with him for the night, and I wasn't one to decline. Peter, with his spider powers, might just be able to save us if anything were to happen during the night.
On the day of the Purge, school was closed. Peter's Aunt May had left earlier to join a few of her friends in a safe house, but not before boarding up the apartment with Peter and I.
It took a lot for her to let us stay in the apartment alone. But, armed with a baseball bat, Peter convinced her that he could protect us if the need arose.
Now we were sitting together, alone on the couch, watching the TV in suspense. The news had previously stated that there would be an emergency broadcast to tell us that the Purge was starting.
Peter had an arm wrapped around me, and he looked rather agitated. That was to be expected, I guess. It's not every day you fear for your life.
As I leaned my head on Peter's shoulder, the TV screen suddenly flashed red, and the monotone female voice spoke.
"This is not a test. This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the first ever Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Weapons of class 4 and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. Police, fire, and emergency medical services will be unavailable until tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. when The Purge concludes. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn. May God be with you all.''
The second the message ended, a horrible droning siren began. The loud sound made me flinch, and Peter brought me into a hug.
"It's going to be okay, Y/N. I promise."
He murmured comforting words, but gunfire interrupted him. It sounded close, and as sprays of gunfire filled the air, so too did horrified screaming.
I tried covering my ears, but it didn't help much. The screaming got worse after a few minutes, and Peter gently got me up from the couch, walking with me to his room.
He'd boarded up his window, and shut his bedroom door after we'd walked in. The baseball bat was beside his bed, but I just hoped we wouldn't have to use it.
I sat down on his bed, trying to calm my nerves. "Relax, okay? I won't let anything happen to us."
At least I had Peter. He made it all easier to cope with.

It'd been a few hours now. The gunfire had ceased, but it could still be heard all across the city.
Due to my horrific nerves, Peter had opted for us to sit in the corner of his room on the floor. I wasn't against it, I felt much safer since he was sitting with his back against the wall, and I was on his lap, bundled up in his hoodie and his arms.
