The new employee

Monday morning, I got dressed and left with Georgia for work. If I were even remotely late, dad would kill me since I was showing the new employee around the office. Why I have to show the new guy around is beyond me. Georgia usually showed the new people around at work.

We stopped and got a coffee as I heard a grave voice order a black coffee. Never trust someone who doesn't mix it up a bit. It means the person set in their ways. Plus, my dad drinks his coffee black - yuck.

We got our coffees and made our way to work. I walked in and heard dad bark, "Kami! My office! Now!"

"Well, good luck, sis," Georgia giggle. I sighed and walked towards dad's office. I didn't even get settled when I got ordered to his office.

I walked into his office with my bag on my shoulder and a coffee in my hand. Dad was talking to some guy in a suit. He must be a new employee.

"Mr. Stevens, you wanted to see me?"

Dad turned and looked at me, "This is Dominick Haywood. He will be taking Heath's place. I need you to show him around and then to his office," he explained.

The guy looked at me; then, I realized it was the same guy from Friday night - great. What's even better is I worked my ass off to get a chance at Heath's position. When they fired him, I figured this was my opportunity, which flew right out the window the minute he said this guy was Heath's replacement.

"Sure," I said, trying to hide my irritation. I turned and walked away. I had to set my things down before showing the twit the new guy's "office."

Georgia stared at me as the new guy followed me. I rolled my eyes, and she knew what that meant. Then I turned to him, "Okay, I guess we should start. Follow me." He nodded and followed me around as I showed him everything, then finally his office.

"Thank you, Kami," he said in a deep voice.

"Don't mention it like ever," I faked a smile as I turned and walked away, leaving the new guy confused. I didn't care. It was ridiculous. I worked my ass off here only to get stuck in a cubicle. I know dad wasn't a fan of nepotism and trust me. I'm glad he wasn't. But the one thing I took pride in was my work ethic. That burned me.

I walked back over to my desk as Georgia peered around the cubicle wall. "Don't even say it," I grumbled.

Georgia opened her mouth, then shut it. I was beyond furious.

I worked through the day, and when five o'clock hit, I called it a day. I wanted to get out of work before I saw dad or the new guy. I was still angry, and I knew I would say something that I would regret. I also knew that maybe it was time to look for a new job. Three years of busting my ass only to watch others get promoted.

As I hurriedly got my stuff together, I heard Dad say, "You okay?"

"Yep, just peachy."

"Kami."

I turned to Dad, "Look, I get the no nepotism deal, but you and I both know, I deserve that spot when you fired Heath," I snapped.

"Really? Because as I see it, you have yet to prove you deserve it."

"What's that suppose to mean?"

"You're late. You are careless. Yes, you work, but you don't prove you deserve that position. I need a person that can show me that they want it."

"But you had no issue giving mom, her position."

"That's because your mother earned it."

"Was it before or after you slept with mom?" I said in the heat of the moment.
