I stood there, confused as Dom stood before me until I saw a little head with brown curls peer around his legs. I stared at her for a minute. She had chubby cheeks and big, emerald green eyes.
"Kami, this is my daughter, Mikayla," Dom said as the little girl gripped his jeans. "She's four."
I crouched and said, "Hi, Mikayla. I'm Kami."
"Hi," Mikayla said in a small voice.
"Do you like cake?" I smiled at her.
Then I watched a smile formed upon her face as she nodded.
"I think you and I are going to get along fine."
Mikayla looked up at Dom, "Daddy, can we have cake?"
He looked down at her, "Did you have lunch?"
"Yes."
"Then yes, we can have cake," he said to her. "Let grandma know we have company and to bring out the cake."
"Okay," she said as she let go of his pant legs and looked at me. She walked towards me and pointed her tiny finger at me, "I like you. You like cake." With that, she walked away.
I stood up as he looked at me, "So, are you okay with this?"
"Why wouldn't I? Dom, she is your daughter. She has to come first."
"Just checking," he said.
I playfully shoved Dom and rolled my eyes as he chuckled. Dom's a goober. We walked into the kitchen, and I saw his mom and dad.
"Kami!" His mom exclaimed.
"Hi, Mrs. Haywood."
"I told you to call me, Margo. It's been a while since we saw you," she said, hugging me.
"Not true. I see Kami every day," Corey said as he hugged me. Margo playfully smacked him.
"Wait, how do you know Kami?" Dom asked his mom.
"You don't remember?"
"Remember what?"
"You met Kami at the gender reveal party when she was six. Scott and Lina invited your father and me along with you. You chased that poor girl around the house. You wouldn't leave her alone," she said to him.
I laughed at that.
He thought about it, and it hit him as he pictured me when I was six.
"Whoa," he said.
"I'm so surprised that you forgot. I mean, you and Justin chased Georgia and Kami around the house. I thought their dads' heads were going to explode," she chuckled.
"That's right, Justin is Mitch's son," I said, thinking about it. Wow, it had been a while. I didn't know about it growing up. When you're six, you think about toys and cartoons. You never think about boys yet.
Then I felt a tiny hand pat my leg. I looked down, and Mikayla said, "Will you sit with me?"
I smiled, "Yes."
"Can I sit on your lap?"
"Sure." She reached up, and I picked her up. I grabbed a plate with cake on it and sat down. She took her spoon as I made mine, and we dug into the cake while she sat on my lap. Dom and his parents watched us.
"Son, this one is a keeper," his dad whispered.
"I think I'm in love," Dom whispered as Mikayla, and I sat there, eating cake.
