whatever happened to reading a decent book, with a gripping plot line, and characters that were likeable? this question gets thrown around a lot, there are talented authors roaming this earth, and we all know it, but they are being ignored by fresh new faces, that only want to write poorly crafted plot lined train wrecks.
I've just finished this amazing book called wintergirls. I admit, the plotline was slightly depressing, but the dynamic and the story of the book were presented well. There was an evident theme to the chapters, that could be noted by a fish.
The rant towards the literature of this day and age, was inspired by John greens nagging on the serious issues of life. To some, John green was an inspiration because of his "the fault in our stars" book, and now movie, and in no way do I say that book was not worthy of an award, it was written well, the characters conveyed the emotion decently and the book carried through a good message, however I got lost because the words were very hard to understand and some of the vocabulary in the book seemed a bit too... mature? to be a teenager book.
However, the severity of the book was inspiring, it wasn't written to promote the dangers of drugs, or a cheap love affair, it was there to portray an ongoing fight between death and the importance of life. Compared to other books, such as the hunger games, the art of literature could be questioned widely. Why on earth would a group of people be thrown into a live version of a glorified war, to kick the crap out of eachother, just to fight until the death. if you want that, just watch the year tens on a Friday night after hell breaks lose over something as pathetic as a shoe brand.
admittedly, There are some authors that I question their work, for example David Walliams. We all know him as the man who will willingly rustle with Simon cowell to make an audience (of people that should be working) laugh, and his writing does exactly that too. His latest book was entitled "gangsta granny'' obviously, that's not going to be a book about a koala in a tutu, but reading it it may as well have been. There is no hate towards David's work, I just dont see the life lesson taken from the book, unless you count "always check your nan doesn't dress like a hooligan and roam the streets on her mobility scooter, planning to mug the queen" a life lesson.
You know a book was a success if you walk away from reading it thinking "what did I learn from that" then you apply that to real life. You may have learnt not to be so open with your problems because every stereotypical book scene has the Bitch, and she's your best friend, but she's a secret Bitch, so all the while your bitching about someone that's not there at the moment your Bitch of a friend is remembering it, and is waiting to repeat it all back to the person you were talking about.
anything could teach you a life lesson, it doesn't always have to be sensible. allow me to demonstrate.
Dave: gee Simon, don't eat that apple, it's really green.
Simon: it looks fine! *spins apple around before biting into it*
Dave: you shouldn't have done that Simon, it's not good for you.
Simon: Dave. quit worrying I'm fine. see I'm alive. *jigs then falls clutching heart*
Dave: aww nuts. I told you Simon! *drops to knees and tries to help Simon*
what you just learnt there was don't eat green apples, that look infected, you'll turn into sleeping beauty... only healthier because you know, an apple killed you.
The lesson of this is that you should always take away valuable life lessons from good books, not things will get you arrested or make you hysterically cry in public.
when reading authors, you shouldn't pick what seems popular at the Moment, and this goes for wattpad aswell, there is potential in the less over rated books, but people ignore it because there isn't enough drug abuse, or sexual contact mentioned, do you want Wattpad to be a life version of 50 shades of grey? it's nice to find a book that isn't polluted with sex and drugs and girls, or a broken family, or a nerd that falls in live with a bad boy. Why can't Care bears come to tea, and then be eaten by a baby elephant? I would read that, heck I'd even read Charlie and Lola because its better than some of the shit that's being published.
does anyone have any favourite books they would suggest to reading? either on Wattpad, or in a library? comment if you like :)
