They approached the side of the mountain, steep cliff sides visible high above them. Nate walked on past these and headed towards the opposite side of the mountain, one hidden by willow trees and boulders.
Nate pushed the willow branches aside and moved through.
A tall waterfall fell from the mountain ridge down between the willows, crashing violently below and then into a lake, trapped in by beaver dams. Small streams escaped, trickling down and disappearing between the trees.
Nate walked between the willows, straight for the waterfall. Melody held tighter to his silky fur as he pushed the willow branches aside and walked behind the waterfall. There widened a cavern, tunnels disappearing deep into the mountain.
"This is quite dramatic.." Anya looked back through the waterfall.
Nate nodded, walking down the tunnel. "Haleras keep their colonies hidden."
Cleo followed, shrugging. "We don't want to be out in the open, the world isn't kind to beauty, or lives."
Anu nudged her. "Beauty and lives must be protected." He murmured gently to himself. "Easiest done with brutal deaths."
The caverns split into multiple tunnels, spreading down and far beneath the forest.
Nate and Melody knew where the tunnels would lead: the underground dwellings of the vampires. They had a monopoly on tunnels, thankfully it seemed not all of them.
Light peered through the end of the lead tunnel, causing the walls to appear purples and deep blue.
Up ahead green starting to shine, behind a wall of foamy white. Another waterfall marked the exit, surrounded again by willow trees.
Anya spoke softly as the water grew near. "Your twin has an eye for beauty Nate, that is a good thing."
Nate nodded. "He always liked to be classy, that definitely carried over from his youth."
Jynx walked in front of the pack and stopped in front. "It is wisest we don't all rush in there at once." His eyes glowed as an exact duplicate of himself stepped out, looking at him and standing like a soldier waiting for orders. Jynx faced the duplicate. "Edit, go in there and announce our arrival. Make sure you make it a peaceful one. No chaos today."
The duplicate bowed his head, slipping through the waterfall.
"Edit?" Anu tilted his head.
Jynx grinned. "He's a shadow, holds part of my soul. A hallucination that can actually interact with the physical world."
"I've killed him before."
Jynx frowned. "Yes, you have. Thankfully I can recast him as long as I live."
"What if I kill you?"
"Then Edit will live and recast me."
"What if I kill you both?"
Anya shot Anu a waning glance, he ignored his.
Jynx sighed. "If you kill both, then I die. End of story."
Anu grinned to himself. "So I can kill you."
"If you kill both."
"I can do that."
Cleo nudged Anu. "How about, we don't try to kill each other."
He smirked, nipping at her ear. "Where is the fun in that?"
Nate stood between them, watching. "Do you just kill everything?"
Anu licked his lips. "I do a lot more than just kill."
Anya growled. "Must you torture everything?"
"Must you sass everything?"
"Yes. Yes I must."
"And why?"
"Because the world is so stupid and illogical I have to do something to keep idiots from destroying themselves."
"Ah, so you understand my motives as well."
"Killing before they destroy themselves is a poor excuse for murder."
"It stops them far better than sass ever will, Anya."
She folded her ears flat. "You are horrible!"
"I try."
In that moment a loud flash of light appeared from the other side of the waterfall.
Jynx covered his face with his paw. "Oh Edit..."
Next followed wild laughter, loud Halera laughter.
It sounded faintly like Nate.
Edit walked through the waterfall, winking an eye before vanishing back on the other side.
The laughter grew louder and the wolves stood back as a massive Halera stepped through, mane fashionably standing in a clean Mohawk. His fur was brushed through neatly, making every black stripe stand out beautifully against his red and white fur. His yellow eyes sparked with excitement.
Nate gasped as the massive halera waved his paw back into the waterfall and grinned widely, showing sharp fangs. "I, Lokan Strider, welcome you to my beautiful patch of chaos."
Then his eyes locked on Nate.
"Brother?"
Before Nate could respond Lokan saw Jynx and sank low in an elaborate bow. "My Lord! God of Chaos! Accept me into your presence!"
Jynx looks at the others. Edit had a lot of explaining to do.
