I sat on my desk, looking up at the teacher as she explained how subject and object pronouns worked. Andi kept making jokes and everyone burst out laughing. My hand was aching to doodle on my paper but the fact that if I was caught was stopping me.
Lorraine was glaring at me. That girl (who I just found out's name was Tessa) was absent. I bit my lip and looked at the ground, feeling scared. She seemed to be satisfied at that, so I tried to look as confident as I could.
Andi made another joke and high five-d his pals, laughing. The teacher grew really annoyed. "Mr. Steel, I would appreciate it if you shut up,"
Half of the class gasped, surprised our teacher would say such a bad word. But in the past few days I've heard much worse, it kind of scared me to think about it...
"Now, who can tell me the subject in this sentence," the teacher interrupted supremely.
I shrank in my seat, not making eye contact; but she didn't have her eye on me. She picked Andi.
"'I' is the subject," He answered, grinning.
"Sit down," she said, moving on.
I felt unbearably bored, this was too easy. I decided to skive off English, excusing myself to the go to bathroom. I wandered around the empty school, wondering if I could go back and sit at the old lockers. I peeked through second grader's door's window, searching for Sirius. I met his eyes with mine and gave him a little wave and stuck out my tongue, walking away.
"What do you think your doing?" A familiar voice said sharply.
"Going to the bathroom," I lied.
Evelyn raised her eyebrows but a voice called out to her. "Hey! C'mon!" Mars whisper-yelled.
She followed him to wherever they were going and I decided to sneak along, suspicious and curious.
They went in an alleyway and Evelyn stared whispering rapidly.
"-she eats human flesh, Mars! And I know she doesn't mind eating it raw," she grimaced. "She could've devoured the children right then and there and we'd be none the wiser!"
"That reminds me of an anime. T-" Mars began.
"Not now," she said impatiently. "But you get it right?"
"You've been raised as livestock for two cannibals who wanted you and your brother as their best meals. You stole the twins and brought them to some boarding thing. Your mother is back and your worried sick because yesterday you blindly waltzed out of the house to save the twins and ended up giving her a view of your face. Yadda yadda yadda," Mars summarised, yawning.
"And your not even at all shaken?" Evelyn said in disbelief. "Mars, they could eat you and everyone you know given the chance and not even feel any pity,"
"I get it! I get it! Your parents are cannibals who love to eat," Mars said.
I bit my lip, confused. What does cannibal mean? What does he mean by livestock? She saved us? Form what?
I heard footsteps and I ran down the hall, hiding
"But honestly, dragging me all the way to the elementary side just to say something you could've whispered to me in class. And the timing! What's with it?"
"We'll be going to one of your other homes," Evelyn said quietly.
I slid into the old locker gap, and slumped against a locker. I winced in pain and stared into space. It didn't make any sense... cannibal... what does it mean?! It sounds similar to cannonball so maybe that's a clue... a kind of weapon?
