"And she caught you?" Blake replied with a laugh.I rested my head in my hands. "Whatever..."
Just then, I heard the rev of a car and looked out the window to see a black, late-model Corvette pull into the parking lot and Wendy stepping out, wearing a fancy new dress and designer boots.
She walked through the door and everyone grew silent, staring in her direction. Then, she sat down next to me and everyone went back to their business.
"What's with the get up?" Blake asked.
"And where'd you get the car?" I added.
"So, you remember my grandpa who died a few months back?" She asked
We nodded solemnly in reply.
"Well, his will finally got processed and being his favorite grandchild-"
"His only grandchild." Blake interrupted, which made me giggle.
Wendy waved her off and continued her story.
"He left me everything!" She squealed.
Blake and I shared a quick glance.
"The big ass house to?" I questioned.
Wendy just nodded, a huge smile spread on her face.
"Drinks are on her." I said, ordering another beer.
She laughed and we settled into normal conversation. Until Blake decided to bring up this morning again.
"Was it like a flirtatious smile or a pity smile?" Wendy asked.
"I couldn't tell, I looked away to quick."
That got both of them laughing.
I rolled my eyes and downed the rest of my beer before getting up to leave.
Wendy grabbed my arm. "Where are you running off to?"
"Gotta take the little rascal to the school for a conference with the principal and that girls parents."
"Oh, well, do you think you could help me move the rest of my boxes into the new house later?"
"Sure thing, I'll give you a call when I'm done with this bullshit."
They chuckled and waved me off...
I pulled up in front of the house and honked a few times.
Beth walked out, wearing her ripped up, blue denim jacked and black cargo pants.
She got in the passenger side and we made our way to the school.
"Trying to steal my style, huh?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Hell no, I dress way cooler than you." She replied with a chuckle.
"In your dreams." I said as I popped a Led Zeppelin cassette into the stereo.
She rolled her eyes with a smile as we sped towards the school.
We pulled into the parking lot shortly after and exited the car.
When we walked into the principals office she looked over from her conversation with the girl and her parents. All four of them, as if on cue, looked us up and down before shaking their heads and returning to their previous conversation.
I leaned against the back wall and listened as Beth pled her case, which by the looks of it, wasn't going to change miss June's mind.
My eyes drifted to the small desk behind her. A framed picture sat on top of it, showing a familiar little girl stood next to a younger miss June. 'Shit, they really are related.' I thought, rolling my eyes.
