It's been a few days since my birthday and everything seemed to slow down, everyone was looking over their shoulders, including me. I had no idea what Steve was capable of and I even started carrying a pocket knife with me just in case...

I pulled into the diner parking lot and saw Rebecca exit hesitantly.

I was worried about her the most. If anything happened to her because of him, I didn't know what I'd do, but I knew it wouldn't be legal.

"Hey." She greeted as she got in.

"Hey... still a little nervous, huh?"

"No..." She replied, still looking around.

"Rebecca, I know a nervous look when I see one."

   She lowered her head.

I slid my hand in hers for reassurance. That made her look at me.

"I know you're scared, I am to... but, as long as you're with me, you're safe." I added a small smile just for good measure.

She smiled back and then we were off.

"You know you don't have to include me in family events, right?"

"It's just dinner." I said with a laugh.

We pulled into the restaurant parking lot and exited my car. We saw my parents, Beth and Stephanie waiting outside. We joined them and made our way into the restaurant.

"We're happy you could join us, Rebecca." My mom said.

   "Thanks, Miss Valentine."

"Please, call me Nicky." She said with a warm smile.

As we walked to our table, Rebecca pulled us back a little and whispered in my ear.

"I thought your parents were divorced?"

I smiled and whispered back. "They are, but they still love each other."

"Then why'd they get divorced in the first place?"

"Because my dad ran out on us years ago. But now that he's back, they kinda fell back into the norm. They just can't admit it yet."

She chuckled as we took our seats.

The waitress took all our orders before making her way to the back.

We fell into normal conversation, as if we were one big happy family.

"So, how'd you two meet?" My dad asked Rebecca and I.

"She gave me a ride home from school and the rest was history." She replied, receiving some small laughs.

"What she meant was, I gave her a ride home and she couldn't help but fall in love with natures masterpiece." I said, gesturing to myself.

Rebecca laughed and rolled her eyes.

"What about your parents?" My mom asked.

I gave her an evil glare before Rebecca responded.

"Well, my moms the principal at the school and my dad passed away a long time ago." She finished.

"Oh, I'm so sorry." My mom replied.

   "It's ok miss- er... Nicky."

My mom smiled sympathetically before asking more questions.

   "So, what're your grades like?"
