'I'm late...I'm late" I mutter under my breath, rushing down the foot path. My boss is the type of person who holds a very long grudge, and I'm still in trouble from the last time I was late. 8am is a very busy time in the city, cars and people bustling around. With all the people in the streets, it's hard to navigate my way through them, clipping and accidentally bumping into some people, shouting an apology as I pass. As I turn the corner I walk straight into someone, my bag dropping to the ground and I stop where I am, steadying both myself and the other person.
"I'm so sorry, I'm in a rush" I take a step away from the boy in front of me, looking around and picking up my bag.
"Oh it's fine, are you okay?"
"I'm fine, again I'm sorry!" I say, securing my bag and quickly continue, making it to work within minutes. I work at a small cafe in the middle of town, starting in the morning when the work rush comes through, ordering mass amounts of coffee to go, making my morning very busy. I guess that's why it takes me so long to realize my cell phone is not in my bag.
"Okay... I've been at work for 3 hours... I most likely lost it here, someone might hand it in later" I tell myself, sighing and heading on my break.
After a few more hours at work I walk home. When I get home, I see my friend standing outside, leaning on the door and waiting for me.
"Hey, What are you doing here??" I ask, hugging her as my greeting.
"Well I got an interesting phone call today..." She starts, following me inside when I open the door.
"Seems like you lost your phone earlier" She adds.
"Do you know where it is? I've been looking for it all day"
"Someone rang me using your phone, said that you walked into them this morning and dropped your phone. He wants to return it to you." She informs me. After relaying the details of the arrangement to me, I left her to raid my fridge until I returned. I walk to the park a few streets down and look around.
The young boy I had run into this morning is sitting on a bench, so I walk over and sit by him. He smiles when he sees me walk over, turning to face me as I sit down.
"So, you have my phone?" I ask with a smile.
"I do, but before I give it to you may I request a reward?" He jokes, holding out my phone in front of me.
"Depends what you want"
"Come have a drink with me"
"A drink? That's easy enough" I answer, picking my phone out of his hand and standing up, waiting for him. As we walk to the coffee shop I find out his name is Jackson, and we spend at least an hour talking over hot drinks.
"Bye~" Jackson calls out, walking away from the shop door. I wave and walk the other way, heading home to see if my friend has left any food in the fridge. I start playing on my phone as I walk, and I notice something new. A contact, to be precise, under Jackson's name. Just as I start to smile my phone rings, startling me and I rush to answer.
"Hello?"
"Hello ______" Jackson's voice is full of humour and my walking pace slows.
"So you just couldn't stay away huh?" I ask him, laughing.
"I tried, didn't work very well though"
