It's always quiet in the book store, customers only coming in on the odd occasion since it is such a small shop. Books line the walls and create the most peaceful atmosphere, and the best smell of old books and new books. There are only ever around two people working at the same time in the store, one out back binding books and the other minding the desk and placing books on shelves. Today I am in the front store, stacking shelves when a customer walks in. I look towards the door but don't see much because other book shelves are in my way.
"Hello~" I chime, even though I can't see who it is.
"Oh, is someone here?" A voice calls out. A boy's voice I notice, tilting my head slightly. A head pops around the shelves and I see the guy. He looks quite short, but then again I am standing on a ladder and looking down on him.
"Do you need any help today sir?" I ask, climbing down from the ladder, suddenly very glad I am wearing jeans because of the cold weather outside.
"Ooh I'm not that old, call me Ryeowook. I'm looking for a book" He says, smiling kindly. I stand near him and lean on the shelf beside me.
"Just a book or something specific?"
"Anything that is a good read" He replies and I nod, taking him to some books that are popular among guys.
"Boys typically like these books the most" I tell him and he turns his nose up.
"Can you show me show books you like?" He asks, not interested in the action books displayed.
"Sure" I put a few book on a nearby table, telling him about the books and authors of each.
"You know a lot about books" He comments, picking up three of the books I have gotten out and follows me to the front desk. After buying the books, Ryeowook seems to hang around.
"Do you mind if I just sit in here and read them? It's too noisy at home" He asks and I nod.
"Come in and read whenever you'd like" I tell him, climbing my ladder again.
For a few days I don't see Ryeowook again, and I start to wonder how he likes the books he bought. Exactly a week after I had met him, at the same time too, Ryeowook walks through the book shop door again, smiling happily and running up to the front desk. I am out back, unpacking new arrival books from display when my co-worker lets the over excited boy into the back room. He starts talking a lot about the books he read, and I smile at his enthusiasm.
"So you liked them?"
"Yes! You've got to show me some more!" He exclaims, pulling me into the main shop and indicating that he's going to follow me. I pick out a few books I had recently finished, putting three books on the table.
"Do you have more?" He asks and I look at him.
"Yes, of course, but read one at a time" I laugh slightly, putting one more book down for him and watching as he buys them.
"Bye ______~!" He smiles, walking back out the door.
"Seung-ah did you give my name to Ryeowook?" I call out to my co-worker and he nods.
"He was asking for 'The pretty girl who reads a lot' so I guessed he was looking for you" He replies.
The next day, Ryeowook comes into the store and reads in the corner, drinking coffee with me during my break and talking about the events in the books. After a month of Ryeowook reading in the store and buying more books than he could read, Ryeowook once again walks into the store.
"Ryeowook!" I smile. Over the month we had gotten to be friends, reading together in spare time and sharing books.
"You've told me about so many great books" Ryeowook starts talking as we sit down, smiling at me.
"So now it's my turn!" He states, taking a book out of a small bag at his side and passing it to me. The book is worn well, and looks like it had been read plenty of times but also taken care of.
"You want me to read this?" I ask, and he nods.
"Okay then" The book is cute, and reading it makes my stomach flutter happily at the cute moments. It takes me a day to finish the medium sized book. As I wait for Ryeowook to come to the store on his usual day and time, I'm playing with the book, flipping the pages and reading my favourite paragraphs again, a slip of paper falls out.
There is a date, time and place on it, and I smile. the date is today, and the place the little park down the road. But the time was 5 minutes ago. I hug the book to my chest and walk outside, heading to the park and instantly seeing Ryeowook on the bench.
"I only just saw your note" I apologize, holding the book out to him.
"Keep the book, and sit down too" He says, and I look at the book.
"The book was so well cared for, so you must like the book, why give it to me?" I sit down, but still hold the book out hesitantly.
"I like you more than the book" He replies, smiling at me. Ryeowook is sitting so close, his leg pressed firmly against mine. I put the book on my lap, looking at it carefully.
"I like you" Ryeowook repeats, taking hold of one of my hands and entwining our fingers.
"Do you like me too?"
