Adora
I stood in the doorway of Santiago's hospital room, watching as he tried his hardest to understand what all the tubes coming out of his arms were.
He let out a loud sigh and his head fell back against the bed, his eyes closing for a split second before they opened again.
When his eyes met mine, it felt like the wind had gotten knocked out of me.
Time seemed to stand still, our eyes boring into eachother's.
"Hi," he whispered.
"Hi," I greeted, biting down on my bottom lip.
"Don't do that," he said, shaking his head as he looked away from me.
"Huh?" I asked, cocking my head over.
"Can you please get over here so I can kiss you?" He asked, his eyes meeting mine again.
I just let out a breath, nodding as I ran towards him. A sob escaped me and I wrapped my arms around him, pulling away as he let out a groan.
"I'm so sorry," I whispered, a tear rolling down my cheek as I smiled.
He shook his head, his lips pulling up into a smile. "Don't be sorry, I needed that."
"I thought I'd lost you," I said, brushing his hair back with my fingers, "I thought-"
He pulled my lips down to his, moving his lips against mine as if he hadn't in years. "I'm sorry, but I don't think that's happening anytime soon."
I laughed and rested my forehead against his, sniffling.
"Why'd you think you lost me?" He asked, rubbing his fingers through my hair, "haven't we been through this? I have superpowers."
I just pulled away from him, furrowing my brows together.
He didn't remember waking up and not knowing who I was.
"You don't remember, do you?" I asked, smiling a weak smile.
"Remember what?" He asked, his thumb stroking my cheek.
I shook my head, smiling as I cupped his hand. "Nothing. It doesn't matter. All that matters is you're here."
He smiled and I wrapped my arms around his neck, resting my chin on top of his head.
"Dad!"
I pulled away from him as soon as I saw the boys barreling in, making Santiago's lips pull up into one of the widest smiles I'd ever seen.
"My boys!" He said, chuckling as they wrapped their arms around him.
Alessandra just smiled and adjusted her purse, folding her arms over her chest.
"He remembered?" She asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, he remembered. Thank God."
She smiled over at me. "I'm happy for you."
"Dad, we have you a huge surprise at home!" Fred said.
"Yeah, it's like, one of the biggest."
"Oh, yeah?" He asked, chuckling as his eyes landed on Alessandra.
"Thanks for keeping them okay," he said, nodding as the boys hugged him yet again.
Alessandra nodded. "They're just happy you're okay. We all are, I think."
He smiled and rested his chin on top of the boys' heads.
"Maybe we should give them a minute," I said.
