Santiago
I looked over at a sleeping Adora in the passenger seat, a warm smile creeping upon my face.
I grabbed her left hand that was rested on the console, pressing a kiss to the back of it.
She slightly shifted but never woke up, making me look in the rearview.
Jo was asleep and Fred was slowly waking up, I could tell.
"God, dad, when are you going to tell us where we're going?" Fred asked, rubbing his eyes, his voice groggy.
I smiled. "When we get there."
"That's not good enough for me," he said.
"I hope you packed cold."
"Yeah, I did because you told me to," he said, "this would be easier if you'd tell me where we're going."
"Adora said the same thing, and my response was it would take the fun out of it."
He just sighed and leaned his head back against the headrest.
"It's for your birthday," I said.
"Jo and I are going to be teenagers."
"Yep, don't remind me," I muttered, scratching the back of my neck.
"Mom and Mateo are coming too?" He asked, poking and prodding into the situation to find out more.
"Mm hmm," I said.
"And Asad and Toni?"
"Yep," I said, looking in my mirror as I switched lanes.
It was pretty much an open road because where we were currently headed was absolutely nothing. It was the outskirts of Seattle, and these happened to be the prettiest.
"Who else is coming?"
"I don't know, why don't you take a wild guess?"
"How are we getting there?"
"You tell me."
He fell back against his seat with a loud sigh. "You suck at this."
"Come on," I said, "it's just a surprise, you'll live."
"Doubt it," he said, leaning his head against the window.
"And you'll love how we get there," I said, "you've just got to be patient."
"Wake me up when we get there," he said, rolling his eyes before closing them.
I just smiled and minutes later he was already asleep again, making me pull Adora's ring out of my jacket pocket.
She rarely wore her ring out because neither of us were technically ready for people to start speculating.
But she wouldn't go a second without it at home. She liked reminding herself, that's what she told me.
I slipped it on her finger and she let out a breath, her eyes fluttering open.
She looked down at her hand and back at the boys, smiling down at her hand.
"Morning," she greeted, giggling a morning giggle.
"Good morning," I said, resting my hand on her thigh.
"Can I mention the fact that I'm going to be your wife?" She whispered, making me chuckle.
"I'll never get tired of hearing it."
She just grinned, rubbing the back of my hand with her thumb.
I felt her staring at me, her usual smile on her face- that smile that only a few people in life would be blessed enough to ever experience.
