The streets are cold tonight. Winter is coming soon. This will be our third winter alone. Pablo barely survived the last one. He's weak and frail. We're both too young to be in this condition. If it wasn't for his survival being my purpose, I surely would be dead by now.
I looked down at the street from the rooftop view. I checked my watch. 22:34. They should be here any moment.
After a few minutes I began to hear the whistle signal echo through the night air. They're here.
I crouched down to lower the targets visibility of me.
A white delivery truck cut around the corner and pulled up to the store across the street from me. My hands began to sweat and I could feel moisture build around my gas mask. It doesn't matter how many times I do this, I can never shake the guilt away.
Two men got out the truck and walked around back. They began to fiddle with the lock...
Strange.
They never take this long to open. Somethings up. We should pull out.
Then I heard clattering against the ground followed by an explosion and severe coughing.
That's the signal
I leaped down from the roof and rolled against the ground. When I stood up all I heard was screeching from the tear gas Grenade and footsteps against the street.
All of us. About 20 people barricaded the van and many jumped the delivery people. A guy in front of me snapped the lock with a tool and slung up the back door.
"Not today you pieces of shit!!" We were met by three men holding guns inside the van. One fired and I jumped out the way just in time to avoid contact. However the bullet struck the person behind me in the face. His head bursted open and he fell into a puddle of blood.
My heart began to pound. I knew something was up. We should've pulled out.
It's too late now.
Shots began to ring out from the van. I heard multiple screams and loud thuds against the ground. People are dying.
I unclipped my flash grenade and threw it into the van. As soon as the flash went off I reached into the van and grabbed a bag and box. I pulled out the box but as I was pulling out the bag, I felt a sharp pain run through my arm.
I Screamed out and looked up. One of the men stomped on my arm and was pointing a gun at me. He smiled and pulled the trigger.
Click
Nothing. He was out of ammo. I dropped the box and grabbed my pocket knife and unclipped it. I stabbed the man in the leg and he yelled out and released me.
I left my pocket knife in his leg and grabbed the bag and box and ran away.
I ran for miles before stopping inside an ally.
I dropped to my knees and began to breath heavy. I had to calm myself down. I can't hyperventilate right now.
My right arm from the forearm down is throbbing. I can barely clinch it.
I calmed myself down and picked up the bag and box and started walking.
I walked for about an hour until I reached the camp.
I'm always welcomed to this place by the smell of musk and tension of depression.
People walked like zombies around me. Half of them are probably dopped up.
I found my tent and opened it up.
I was greeted by Pablo who looked like he just finished crying. He cries often. I can't blame him. I want to cry too but I can't. I can't let him see me as weak.
"Here." I said as I handed him the bag. "It's chips. I'm sorry they're not your favorite. It's the best I could do."
He stared at the bag in silence for a second. I feel like I let him down.
He then looked up at me and smiled "That's okay! Thank you. I hope it wasn't any trouble."
I starred at him in disbelief and then smiled back. "Nah, it went without a hitch." I said as I grabbed my right arm.
I looked over at the box of drinks and began to open them.
"Oh, brother..." Pablo said. "Yes?" I responded while continuing to open the box.
"Did you see the men in white suits earlier?"
I stopped opening the box and looked at him.
"What..."
"What men in white suits?."
