The clang of metal woke me up and I groaned knowing what time it was.

"All right kid, its time to get up don't make this harder than it has to be." The voice called. It was the Monday guard, Lucas. I slowly came out from under the thin comforter as I got up from the ting cot.

Life was extremely uncomfortable in the lab, I would be much happier if I was still in that damned orphanage. I had a schedule here. Nothing changed. Most of my life I had spent walking through the exact same halls. It was difficult the first years I was brought here. I've tried to escape too many times to count on both hands. They were persistent here, it was what they wanted, to break me. Eventually, I lost hope of getting out and gave up. Instead, memorizing each and every day until I knew what would be happening every single hour like the back of my hand. But today would be different. I just didn't know it yet...

I rolled my tired eyes and tried to look unbothered as I purposely brushed past Lucas with more force than necessary into the bathroom connected to my room. I took as long as possible in the shower risking the possibility of the guard breaking down the door. I pulled on my lab uniform and when I finally emerged, he simply followed me to the door. I waited for him to swipe his access card to open the door but he just gave me a pointed look,

"Is that REALLY necessary? It's not like I can escape even if I tried." I said with a bitter tone,

He let out a sigh and rubbed his forehead

"I know you hate this but PLEASE for your sake just comply for once! It's getting old." I could tell I was wearing his patience thin and finally gave in, raising my wrists together for him.

"You just had to ask nicely..." my voice was laced with venom and I gave him a sickly sweet smile just to further annoy him. He quietly clamped on the pair of specially designed cuffs and swiped his access card, opening the door.

He nodded to the 2 guards stationed at my room and pushed on towards the labs. In the mornings and late nights is when they ran their tests. In the afternoons I had classes, not with other students of course. Just a large tablet to work on and video hologram lessons. We got to the labs and he swiped his card again, this was his time to leave. He passed me on to the guard in the lab but not before giving me a look that screamed "BE OBEDIENT" I ignored him and continued in. Lucas was the closest thing to a friend I had here. He escorted me to and from the different rooms and buildings. He was in his 30s and when he first met me he had been terrified, never spoke a word to me. It was funny to me, a 5-year-old, to see an adult shake and stutter because of a child. It took a good year and a half for him to talk to me in a friendly manner.

The guard at the door of the lab entrance motioned me to the direction of the metal table where I took a seat on the cold steel stool. A worker placed a tray in front of me with bland porridge, some fruit and a small cup of different sized pills. I forced the porridge and fruit down ignoring the protest from my stomach. The scientists and doctors here had little patience when it came to my health, last time I resisted eating they strapped me to a chair and force fed me. That was just one of the forms of discipline they used on me. Of course, none of them were actually lethal, there's only so much you can do to a child. When I finished the food I quickly downed the pills in a gulp and stood up. The assistant quickly cleared up the tray and left the lab.
