Thaw

Midtown high.

I awoke to my alarm and shot up from bed, I wasn't used to being waked by a blaring noise these days. After regaining a normal heart rate I yawned and got out of bed. I decided to shower before school and took out a pair of black jeans and a grey NASA t-shirt from my wardrobe, leaving the room towards the bathroom. By the time I was changed and ready, the smell of bacon and eggs wafted through the apartment. I packed my bag, slung it over my shoulder and walked into the kitchen. Lorenzo was cooking breakfast while Rosa poured coffee. "Morning hun, how'd you sleep?" Rosa asked sliding a mug towards me. I declined and she shrugged before taking it back, drinking it herself.

"Amazing, the room is so beautiful, thank you."

"Don't mention it! The room has been empty for far too long... " Lorenzo replied plating the food.

After eating breakfast, we all piled in Rosa and Lorenzos Chevy truck. They both wanted to come along to see me off on my first day. I even got texts on the group chat from all the Avengers wishing me luck on my first day of school. I was starting a month later than when school officially began which probably meant everyone already had their friend groups and schedules down, I tried not to think of that though and instead, focused on memorizing the path to the school. I was going to be taking the subway for the rest of the year, but Lorenzo was driving me for the first few weeks as I became accustomed to the route. The car stopped in front of a large building, kids were piling into the school, and I stared up in awe at it. I knew what to expect, I searched it online but it still managed to take my breath away. Apparently, it's a stem school for scientifically inclined people.
"Should we go in with you?" Rosa asked upon seeing my expression.
"No that's alright, thank you, though! I'll see you after school." I said opening the door and getting out. "'I'll be right here at the end of the day, break a leg kiddo!" Lorenzo said before driving away.

I stood there a moment waving at the car before turning around and taking a deep breath, I put on my brave face and made my way into the school careful not to bump into anyone. I knew I had to go to the office to get my schedule so that's where I headed first. I stood on my toes to see better and spotted it off to the side of the entrance of the school. The bell rung and students now stopped chatting and quickly cleared the halls. I made my way to the office. "Hi, my names Astrid, I was told to get my schedule from here," I told the lady working at the front desk. She looked through some files and pulled out a package. "Here you are, stay right here I'll have someone show you around." She said dialling a number into the phone on her desk. I looked through the package while I waited, it had a pamphlet about the school, a map of campus, a note to parents and finally my schedule. "Mrs. M, how are you?" a girl entered the office and greeted the office lady.

"Great Liz, and you? How are your parents?" she replied.

"Amazing thanks. What can I help with?" the girl named Liz asked.

"We have a new student and she hasn't gotten the grand tour yet!"

I gave a small wave to Liz and shifted on my feet, suddenly feeling insecure under her gaze. she seemed nice and was really pretty. She was tall, with wavy dark hair and skin to match.

"Of course! do you have your schedule?" she asked me, I lifted the schedule I clutched in my hand and nodded. "Ok great. Nice seeing you Mrs. M!" she said exiting.
Thank you!" I said to Mrs. M and jogged ahead to catch up with Liz. "So, what's your name?" she asked.

"Astrid."

"Well, it's nice to meet you Astrid, I'm Liz Allan. So first year huh?" she asked me while we walked down the main hall.

"Yea. How about you?"

"It's also my first year here. Midtown's just like every school, you know how it works right?"
