Owlflight curled her tail in barely withheld anger, her gaze bright with fury.
"That is not my name!" She snapped, standing to shake the dust out of her thick pelt, "That rabbit was mine, mouse-brain, and you ruined my hunt." She glared. He smiled dangerously, but his eyes glared back.
"Oh? I ruined your hunt? Last I checked, you were the one who leaped at me." Owlflight scoffed.
"Hardly!" She trilled, her voice incredulous and fiery, "I was downwind, that rabbit was mine!" The tom sat back, the smug air she'd associated with him since their first meeting returning.
"Calm down, Bunny. There are plenty of rabbits in this forest. It's not the end of the—" He was cut off as she lunged at him, knocking him on his back and pinning his shoulders down using her weight. He huffed, winded, and looked up at her through surprised, yet slightly amused eyes. Owlflight scowled down at him, her whiskers quivering in annoyance.
"My. Name. Is. Not. Bunny!" She snapped, pausing between each word to emphasize her point. "Understand?" The tom smirked.
"Sure thing.. Bunny," he replied, his amused chuckle soon followed by a groan as she pressed him further into the ground. "Fine," he huffed, "I'll stop, just get off." Owlflight twitched her tail, pushing down once more before releasing him. She stalked around him, circling the now annoyed tom.
"What are you doing here?" She asked, "Other than being annoying?" The golden brown tom rolled his eyes.
"The forest doesn't belong to you, sweetheart," he scoffed, "I go where I please." Owlflight huffed in annoyance.
"How about you use my actual name, for once?" She snapped, "Its Owlflight!" He rolled his eyes.
"I know, you told me the last time you yelled at me," he snapped back, earning a frustrated keen from Owlflight.
"You're so unbearably annoying," she growled, "Can you not just leave? This meadow is apart of my territory and you're trespassing." The tom froze, his eyes narrowing dangerously. Owlflight tensed as he slithered toward her, though she couldn't help but admire the way the toms muscles ripples under his glossy coat. He was obviously adept for survival and would likely be a tough opponent if it came down to battle. He stopped right in front of her, his muzzle only whiskers away from hers.
"Now listen here, princess," he glared, his tail raising as she started to protest the nickname. When she snapped her mouth shut, he continued, "I've been living in this forest since I was born, and now group of strangers is gonna run me out of my home, got it? You may be marking out borders and laying claim to parts of this forest, but you better not expect the cats who've been living here their whole lives to turn belly up and let you take over our homes. Got it?" He asked, his voice rough and his eyes hard. Owlflight lifted her chin defiantly.
"Oh? So what are you going to do? Attack me?" She stepped closer to him, her eyes lighting in challenge, "You may have lived your life wild, but none of your fighting skills could possibly compare to the training I've received," she growled, her voice alight with the pride of a warrior, pride that had been instilled into her soul since she was born. She was born from two great Clans, and she would not back down without a fight. The tom stepped closer, his anger trading out for excitement as a challenge lit his golden gaze.
"Is that a challenge, Bunny?" He asked, his voice silky and goading. She raised her hackles in annoyance.
"It's a warning, mouse-brain! Stay away from our territory!" 'And out of my pelt!' She added mentally. The tom grinned, his demeanor changing instantly from threatening to lazy.
"A little bird told me that you were offering up shelter to loners like me. Yet here you are telling me to leave," he smiled cheekily at her, "Why do you hate me, Bunny?" Owlflight snorted.
"As if I'd waste my energy hating you, I don't even know your name. I didn't think you'd be interested, is all. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back. Escort yourself out, won't you, or the next cat who finds you won't be as kind." She huffed, turning sharply as she began to stalk away. She was just about to disappear into the forest when his voice stopped her.
"Rowan," he said, and Owlflight turned, her tail still curled in annoyance.
"What?" She asked, bewildered by his general randomness. The tom rolled his eyes.
"My name," he said, "My name is Rowan. In case you were wondering." Owlflight held his gaze, before sighing slightly as she looked away. 'Rowan...'
She nodded, and turned away. "Goodbye, Rowan," she said softly before disappearing into the forest. He stared after her for a moment before grinning.
"Goodbye Owlflight," he said to no one in particular, "Until next time."

Owlflight walked into camp as distracted as a kit in a meadow, her thoughts preoccupied with fleeting thoughts of her encounter with Rowan. Was she too hard on him? Maybe he was annoying because he was lonely.. it must be difficult surviving all alone. Guilt flooded her, but before she could snap out of it, she collided into a wall of fur.
"Owlflight!" Bear exclaimed, turning around to help steady the she cat, "Are you okay?" Owlflight shook her head.
"I should be asking you that," she shook her pelt out, laughing slightly, "Sorry I ran into you." Bear chuckled.
"You're fine," he smiled, "But seriously, are you okay? I haven't seen you so distracted." He said with concern. Owlflight smiled, patting her friend on the shoulder with her tail.
"I'm fine, you worry too much," she purred, "I'm okay, just a... long patrol," she said decisively. "Anyway, how was your patrol?" Bear glanced at her in concern a moment longer before telling her about his day.
"My patrol was good. Stone, Ravenleaf and I marked out the border you and Buzzardwing scouted yesterday. I already see what you mean about the greenhouse. And the meadow!" He added. Owlflight tensed a bit when he mentioned the meadow until she remembered the bigger meadow she found yesterday while exploring toward the Twoleg barn. While looking for where to expand, Owlflight had found not only the big meadow, but a broken fence piece that led to a greenhouse, as Bear called it. Inside the clear walls were neatly planted rows of herbs, ranging from catmint to marigold. It was the luckiest find of all, in Owlflight's opinion, especially with an expecting queen in the group.
"I'm glad you secured that part of the territory.. did you meet any resistance from any cat?" She asked, her voice faltering a bit at the end. Bear eyes her, but answered nonetheless.
"No, it was a smooth patrol. Are you sure you're okay?" He asked, and Owlflight smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes.
"I'm fine, Bear," she reaffirmed. But if she was really was fine, then why hasn't her heart stopped racing since she left the smaller meadow?
Does that count as a cliffhanger? 🤔
