Jennie P.O.V.
I finally met her.
I finally met Lisa again.
It felt like forever since the last time I saw her. I never forgot about her. Since childhood, I've never believed in love at first sight or any of those cheesy whatnots.
And no, what happened to me was not love at first sight. It's kind of hard to experience that in my line of work where most people I meet for the first time are either crying or dying.
Lisa was definitely not an exception.
Flashback
I was doing my regular rounds one afternoon. It wasn't a busy day for me and I was about to head to the canteen to get some snacks when my phone rang with Jisoo on the caller ID. I immediately answered since I know she was on duty and she wouldn't call me if it was not important.
"Unnie? What's the problem?" I asked after answering the call. She was "Jennie, please come to the operating room right now. I'll explain everything to you when you get here" she ordered then ended the call promptly. I waste no time and hastily went to the operating room. Jisoo was waiting for me outside the operating room. She was wearing a scrub suit so I knew she was about to perform surgery. She noticed me arrive and quickly approached me. "What seems to be the problem, unnie? We both know you don't need my assistance in surgery" I said chuckling softly. She kept a serious face so I realized that now is not the time to joke around.
"As you can see, two operating rooms are occupied. Unfortunately, both patients are under my care and must undergo surgery ASAP. Obviously, I can't perform both surgeries at the same time and both of them have very little time to spare so I-"
"Which one is mine?" I cut her off. Time is of the essence and we need to start both surgeries now. She smiled in relief, "I'm giving you the patient in OR-2. Officer Lalisa Manoban. Two gunshot wounds at the back with no exit wounds and severe blood loss."
I nod and tied my hair into a quick ponytail, "I'm on it. Good luck on your surgery" I said and proceeded to the changing rooms to put on a scrub suit and went to the OR-2 right after.
One bullet was located and extracted easily since it didn't go that deep but the other was a different case. It was lodged deep that I had a hard time reaching it safely without damaging the surrounding tissues. It was difficult to extract but I had to pull it out or else it would cause an infection in the blood stream. One strong pull and I got the bullet...... but I didn't know that it hit an artery which made the extraction cause extreme bleeding. Shit.
"She's lost too much blood, she can't afford to lose more. Squeeze the blood bags and bring in more!" I ordered two assistants who quickly complied. "Doc! Her heart rate is dropping!" I look at the monitors which is beeping faster than before. I managed to stop the bleeding but her heart can't keep up with the blood loss. "Doc we're losing her!"
I saw a flat line on the monitor.
"I will start pumping! Prepare the defibrillator!" I shouted, "Come on Lalisa, we need you to fight. You're an officer right? You still have to buy me a donut after this" I talk to her while pumping her chest. I have never lost a patient during a surgery and Lalisa is definitely not gonna be my first. "Defib ready!" I look to my left and quickly took the two paddles. "Charge to 200..... Clear!" I hit Lisa with the charge and her body shook as the electricity flowed throughout her body. "Pulse is still weak doc." I am panicking a little now. "Lalisa come back to us. I won't let you die" I said looking at her. "Charge to 500..... Clear!" I hit her again with the paddles at shifted my gaze to the monitor.
"Heart rate stable! She lives!" An assistant happily announced and we all breathed a sigh of relief. "Let's patch her up quickly guys. Great job." I said then looked at Lalisa again. 'You fought and survived. I bet you're a great cop.' I smiled behind my mask and started to patch up the wounds. After 5 gruelling hours, the surgery was finished and Lalisa was brought to the recovery room. I thought about visiting her after she's transferred to a private room. When I got out of the operating room, Jisoo was already waiting for me.
"Thank you for saving her" she said while smiling. I was about to answer her but she interrupted me, "I'm sorry but there is a bit of complication to the situation that happened. You do know the rule that no other doctor can handle a patient of another doctor, right? So we kinda broke the rules right now." I just nodded. I didn't forget about the rule but saving a life was more important for me. "I'm really sorry but can I ask you to keep this a secret from anyone? I might lose my job if the committee finds out about this." She asks shyly. I see her eyes were hoping I would say yes to her favor.
How could I even say no? She's my sister and I don't want her to hate me. I fake a smile and nodded to her. She smiles and thanks me before leaving.
Well I guess I can't visit her after all.
End of flashback
