Chris' POV

Dread washed over me as the cold voice of Balthazar, a vampire from the council, penetrated the room, sending shivers down my spine. The word 'scare' was an understatement for what I felt in that moment.

"And you live with a human," he continued, his tone dripping with condescension.

"Don't dare to touch him," Jake retorted, his voice filled with bravery and a hint of defiance.

"I'm not that kind of vampire," Balthazar grinned, his gaze piercing as it shifted to me. His eyes transformed from black to a menacing shade of red, and I instinctively clung to Jake's arms, silently begging for his protection. I hoped he could sense the plea in my eyes.

"I know who you are and all you've done, Balthazar," Jake asserted, his tone unwavering.

"You don't know me, Jakey-poo," Balthazar replied, attempting to soften his features with a twisted, baby-faced expression that contradicted the danger lurking in his eyes.

"What is your purpose for coming in here and finding me?" Jake boldly demanded, his protective stance never faltering.

"We are here to inform you that the Council de Bampira has decided to change our king. King Julius is no longer capable of ruling over vampires," Balthazar explained, his words laden with a sinister undertone. "Our late king was enamored with his newly wedded wife, Morgana, and that compromised his ability to govern us effectively."

"And what did you do to King Julius and his wife?" Jake questioned, his eyes locked onto Balthazar's.

"What would you do to individuals who neglect their responsibilities?" Balthazar grinned maliciously as he spoke.

Jake fell into an uneasy silence, sensing the gravity of the situation.

"Punishment, Jake. That is what they both faced—serious and deadly punishment for their irresponsibility," Balthazar declared, breaking the heavy silence that hung in the air.

My instinct to flee intensified, urging me to run, hide, and escape from these monstrous beings—deadly monsters. However, abandoning Jake in the presence of these ominous vampires was not an option. Glancing at Jake's face, I could see a mixture of nervousness, fear, and beads of sweat forming on his forehead. These were the vampires he feared and had been running from.

"So, what do you want from me?" Jake finally asked, breaking the tension that gripped the room.

"We traced your roots, and we found out that you have the blood of the first vampire and our first king, Dracula," Balthazar revealed, his words hanging in the air like an ominous prophecy.

Silence enveloped the room, each second ticking by as the weight of Balthazar's revelation sank in.

"Jake, we want you to be our next king," Balthazar declared, laying bare the ominous destiny that awaited Jake.
