Chris' POV

The air in the bakery was thick with the sweet scent of freshly baked goods, but my mind was elsewhere. My shift at Steve's Bakery was dragging on, and the fatigue from the recent events weighed on me. I felt uneasy, sensing that something was off, and my body grew restless.

Steve noticed my distracted state. "Chris, is everything okay? You seem a bit out of it today."

I forced a smile. "Yeah, just tired, I guess."

"Alright, take a break if you need to. You've been working hard lately," Steve suggested, concern etched on his face.

I nodded appreciatively and headed outside for some fresh air. As I sat on a bench, I couldn't shake the feeling that Jake might be facing some challenges. It was as if an invisible thread connected us, and when he was in trouble or distress, I could sense it.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Jake.

Where are you?

I replied promptly.

Home, not feeling well. Steve let me have a rest.

Before I could send another message, Jake's phone flew out of his hand, and Balthazar, the vampire council leader, caught it.

"Concentrate, Jake. We've got company," Balthazar declared, the seriousness in his voice sending shivers down my spine.

The room filled with vampires, each carrying the severed heads of werewolves. Balthazar explained that they were attempting an attack during our duty, but their plot was foiled by a spy.

"See what I'm talking about? The war between ancient enemies has begun again. This will be a big one. We need to recruit vampires and others to join forces with us," Balthazar asserted.

"Your wish is my command." Jake stood up, leaving the room, and I couldn't help but worry about what awaited him.

As I contemplated the situation, a sense of danger enveloped me. It felt like the calm before the storm, and I couldn't shake off the feeling that our lives were about to take a turn for the worse.
