Chris' POV
In the aftermath of the encounter with the Council de Bampira, Jake refrained from returning to our apartment at night, perhaps fearing that his presence might attract danger, putting me at risk as well. This morning, he informed me that he would spend the night at King's place, sparing me the anticipation of waiting.
As we shared our morning meal of bacon and eggs, his favorite, I focused on the newspaper while Jake headed to the bathroom for a shower. When he emerged, half-naked, and strolled through our apartment, his, correction, our apartment, he playfully remarked, "Flies will enter your mouth if you keep it open like that." Startled, I closed my mouth, realizing it had been hanging open unintentionally.
He grinned at me, and the sight felt like heaven. His sculpted body, complete with six-pack abs and a suggestive bulge beneath the towel, left me yearning to touch him, especially with his wet looks. As he walked toward me, he bowed down while I was sitting.
"What are you doing?" I questioned.
"Why are you blushing?" he chuckled.
Blushing uncontrollably, I replied, "No, I'm not," looking down in shyness.
"Look at me, Chris," he insisted, using his fingers to raise my face. Tingles and electricity coursed through my body, accompanied by a fluttering sensation in my stomach as if a forest of butterflies had taken flight.
Suddenly, he kissed me, and we shared a passionate moment. However, the bliss was interrupted by a knocking on the door. Frustrated, I reluctantly let go of Jake as he retreated to his room, and I went to address the interruption. It turned out to be King.
"Is Jake still here?" he inquired, peering inside.
"Yeah!" I replied tersely.
"Can I come in?" he asked, and I reluctantly gestured for him to enter.
"Thank you," he said, irritatingly, as he took a seat on the couch. After a few minutes, Jake emerged.
"Chris, can you leave us for a moment?" Jake commanded.
"Okay," I complied, heading to the bathroom for a shower. When I returned, both Jake and King were gone.
I changed and went to work, focusing on keeping Jake out of my mind. The day passed, and I didn't realize it was almost time to leave. I texted Jake but received no reply.
Walking home with earphones plugged in, music filled my ears, yet I couldn't shake my concern for Jake. Upon entering our apartment, I noticed a lit candle near the door. Opening it, I discovered Jake, dressed in his most formal attire, a table set for two, and a candlelight atmosphere.
"Welcome home!" he greeted, handing me a rose.
"What is this?" I blushed.
"A dinner for us. A very special dinner," he explained, playing "Fly Me To The Moon" by Frank Sinatra. Although a bit old, it was the sweetest song I'd ever heard.
"May I dance with you?" he asked, extending his hand.
"I don't dance, Jake," I replied.
Ignoring my protests, he pulled me into a dance. It felt like I was dancing with an angel, soaring to the sky.
"Why are you dressed like that?" he inquired.
"Jake, I'm daydreaming here," I thought.
"What do you want me to look like? You want me to look like Anastasia Steele with her plum dress?" I replied.
"Who's that?" he asked.
"Oh, nothing," I said, remembering that tomorrow was the day he would reveal his final decision.
"Tomorrow is the day, right?" I asked.
"Yes, and I'm nervous. I don't know what my answer will be," he confessed, hugging me.
I was at a loss for words. I feared for him too.
"I'm here, Jake," I whispered, hugging him tighter, tears streaming down my face. "I will be here. I will never leave you, and you will never be alone."
"Thanks, Chris," Jake said, and we shared a poignant kiss.
